Cathay Pacific HK Stopovers

Hi All,

Planning well in advance for award travel in early 2019. I’d like to use CX either outbound or inbound for travel SYD-NRT/HND (or reverse, obviously), and would like to factor in a couple of nights in Hong Kong on the way through. Does anyone know if this is possible under the current rules? I have had a look but am having trouble making sense of Cathay’s stopover rules when using points redemption. Will I incur the cost of two one-way redemptions if I choose to do this, or will it all be covered under one itinerary?

Agree that the rules aren't clear.



From memory when I tried to do a stop over en route to the US earlier this year I was limited to 24 hours. After that the points required increased.

That's not always possible.

I've seen from personal experience earlier this year that flights from Sydney to Chicago were available. But if you did Sydney - Hong Kong, Hong Kong - Chicago, flights were not available as a multi city booking.

Thanks for the input. I’ll keep looking into it and perhaps go answer shopping through the CX call centre. My understanding is the same as your experience, Ralph - less than 24 hours is all that is permitted. Shame if that is indeed the case.

Stopover had to be less in 24 hours? That is only enough to get some sleep. No time to have fun at all.

Exactly. Although I have read in a recent article on The Points Guy something that led me to believe stopovers on redemption bookings were possible. Can’t quite find the reference though.

Stopovers certainly are permitted (at least for J), but you may have to ring up. Shouldn’t end up costing any more points.

Had a need to do an origin open jaw in Europe on a redemption (actually booking on BA using Asia Miles). Came up against the rule that origin open jaw had to be to same country, which killed that. In the end, the helpful operator decided that the best way to book it was a one-way with a stop over for a week. Because of the short distances, it actually ended up less points than two one ways, or even a return booking.
