Cathay premium economy fares from various US airports to Australia and other Asia Pacific destinations (e.g. SIN) via Hong Kong are pricing cheaper than economy for various dates in January. For example:

JFK-BNE 6/1/2013 $1657.86.
LAX-SIN 7/1/2013 $1189.30

I'm not sure if this helps anyone but I was positioned in LA via cheap Jetstar and China Eastern without a return flight and Cathay came up as my cheapest option to return to Brisbane. All available for booking via the Cathay website.

Thanks that's good research.

Once again this underscores the fact there is little rhyme or reason on airfare pricing.

I looked at PEK-HKG-MEL in September during the peak national holiday period and PE was cheaper than Y too. Good piece of intel with CX to be aware of.
