Chance of flying on the Qantas A380

Hey guys,

On the 5th of January 2011 I'll be flying out Sydney to Los Angeles on QF11. As many know, it is the A380 flight route however as we also know the A380 is grounded for that route and is using the alternate 747 aircraft. What I want to know is, what is the chance of the A380 coming back into service before I fly out. Keep me posted!

(and I haven't bought a ticket).

I'm flying planned-A380 again on 1st Feb and I'm NOT optimistic.

Curious.. I know the 747 aircraft that i'm going on doesn't have the fully flat bed like the A380 is advertised with. Do you know if there is any other aircrafts or flight routes that do have the full flat bed option and is with Qantas? *I'm flying business class*

From my source in QF - no way by Jan 2011.

Also, the A380 in Sin remains grounded there until future notice. This aircraft is unable to fly and can only be fixed in France. Apparently pulling it apart and transporting it to France is a very expensive exercise and may not be undertaken.

What an embarrassment for Rolls Royce:oops:. My Business Studies students have been closely following the whole A380 incident, and have difficulty in believing how serious the problem was / is. They're so used to planes not falling out of the sky.

As far as I know - no.

I may be wrong but I don't believe any of the 744's have been fitted with the Skybed Mark II's yet.

Short version ... I'm booked on QF31 on Friday (Christmas Eve) to London. With only two 380s in service I'm expecting that my particular flight my be changed to a 747. I'm also booked on QF32 in January. For that I am more hopeful.

Long version ... I booked my flights in October last year, making sure both flights were on 380s. In January, Qantas changed their flight schedules so that (somehow) both were on 747s. Then for a variety of reasons I had to postpone my trip, a blessing as I could spend an extra week and a bit in Europe, so I changed to Christmas/New Year and again picked the 380s. Then the incident over Indonesia in November... and now snow in Heathrow.

If anything it will be an experience!

QF31 this Friday is scheduled to be an A380. There are 4 aircraft now in service.

Of course with the current weather disruption, it could still be changed to a 747
 
QF release today confirmed 4 A380s in service, 5 by end of week.
New delivery early Jan which will make 6.
 
I flew SYD -> LHR QF031 on the 16th Dec was supposed to be A380 and got flipped for a 747 and I was in Biz and they didn't have the flat beds.

My return (if I make it out of LHR) is on QF032 and again flipped to a 747.

I fired off a complaining email requesting an upgrade to First but yet to receive a response.

October last year? I did not think it was possible to book flights more than 12 months in the future. :confused:

They all have flat beds. It's just that some of them ie the 747 beds are not horizontal.

Why complain to QF? They are not enjoying this piece of RR stuffing around any more than anyone else. In fact I am quite sure that they are more annoyed than any one individual could ever be.

aircraft substitutions happen to every airline, every day of the year due to various circumstances... read your 'conditions of carriage'... 'qantas does not guarantee you any particular seat even if your reservation is confirmed'...this condition is not unique to qantas!!!
 
The six aircraft mentioned above are:

  • VH-OQE and VH-OQF were the first two returned to service following checks. They were originally grounded in LAX and ferried back to SYD to commence LHR ops.
  • VH-OQD was also originally grounded in LAX and ferried back to SYD and also now operating LHR services.
  • VH-OQG was delivered December 18th and commenced service as few days later.
  • VH-OQB was in FRA for maintenance when the fleet was grounded. It has been returned to service following completion of maintenance and inspections and probably some engine changes.
  • VH-OQH is due for delivery in January 2011 with VH-OQI due soon after.
QF was originally hoping for OQG, OQH and OQI to be delivered in 2010 but the supply of good engines has delayed H and I until January.

Ditto except I'm booked on QF to LAX on 2/2/11. I booked QF in preference to Virgin because of the A380, and paid $300 extra. Oh well, that's life I suppose. We may get lucky!
 
According to QF res this morning, the girl said that the A380 was back up and running. I was able to request seats for the missus and me.

Has anyone flown on a 380 to LAX recently?
