We have a family trip coming up this Christmas flying VA SYD - ZQN return. Leaving on 21/12 and returning 28/12.

Toddler G and myself are booked on a saver fare. Mrs G is booked on the Amex reserve free flight. I have asked that itineraries are linked although my experience is that VA often don't actually do this properly. Baby G is due to be born on October 5th so will be added to the booking once they officially exist. I am Velocity platinum, Mrs G is silver Toddler G is red.

As the day grows closer the prospect of those hours in Y grows more frightening. I've have read a few posts on AFF which suggest that Plats have had success securing points upgrades when booked on a saver fare not a flexi, and was just if anyone had any tips for how I might achieve this?

Chance of upgrading from savers is pretty close to zero, in my opinion. I think reports of that occurring date back to the days of 'taster upgrades' to premium economy.

On the plus side, the odds of getting the $60 change fees to upgrade to flexi fares (so that you can then do points upgrades) is quite high. But your mix of infants, a paid saver and a free Amex flight might complicate things.

In any case trans-Tasman PE isn't much to write home about, unless a refitted aircraft sneaks onto the route that day.
