I am travelling international with a friend who is a member of the chairman's club. I have never flown higher than economy, despite travelling overseas on numerous occasions, on an international flight. We are booked in for premium economy and I was wondering what the the chances are of being upgraded to business or first class?

Any input on the chances and benefits of Chairmans club would be greatly appreciated!

Though I have travelled with a CL member a fair bit this year, I haven't had any experience of upgrades - we've only flown domestic J.

My guess would be that you'd be first in line if Qantas were considering any op-ups. If they're not, then you're chances would be reasonably slim.

However Qantas will unpredictably do things for CL - like upgrading you when they wouldn't otherwise do an op-up - but you can't really plan ahead for it.

And, apparently sometimes you don't get upgraded when you "should": http://www.australianfrequentflyer....airmans-lounge-access-27302-2.html#post390235

If there was a reason for a request for an upgrade (i.e. a CL was travelling with his wife for an anniversary) then I think you'd have a particularly good chance - but for a run of the mill trip it will depend mostly on the load of the aircraft I'd say.

Let us know what happens!

Thanks for the advice.

I know that the person I am travelling with is regularly upgraded on domestic flights. In fact she was travelling recently with her family Syd - MEL and they were all upgraded!

I just hope I too am that lucky!

Will definitely let you know!

Even if you don’t get the upgrade, I see you’re from SYD so I’d be looking forward to the time spent in the F lounge, so if you’re not upgraded that’ll more than make up for it ;)

Your odds would be better if you are both booked in the same pnr. If not make sure your bookings are linked so they know you're travelling together so chances are if the CL member is upgraded, you will be too.

Quite often a couple may be booked on the same flight but not linked so the person with higher status is upgraded & the spouse/partner is still in Y.

Even if the upgraded person is willing to go back to Y chances are that seat will now be occupied by someone else & you may not be able to sit together in Y so easier to stay in J.
