I have a flight from LAX to LIM via Miami (AA1758/2111) on 29 December and would like to change the Miami-Lima sector to a few days later, preferably 2 January so I can spend New Years Eve at EPCOT Florida.

My problem is Qantas can't (won't?) help me because they claim it is a married flight and would have to cancel the entire booking meaning I lose the LAX-Miami seat as well as incur point penalties and American Airlines won't help me because they say Qantas controls the ticket. It is booked as a T code which I understand carries all the restrictions but why does the QF website say you can make changes to dates or flight numbers for 2500 points. I can access the booking on AAdvantage but can't make changes online as its outside North America. Availability doesn't seem to be the problem on either AA or Qantas site and we're still looking at over 6 months in advance.

Qantas also tell me I can't book Lima-Buenos Aires online as they don't have an office in Lima, however if I had booked Miami-Lima-Buenos Aires all at the same time I could've done it online and saved myself the 2500 points. As you can probably tell I'm not really a frequent flyer, just a would-be-if-I-could-be. Is there any way around this or is it just another way the program is as difficult as possible to actually redeem points.

Logging onto my QFF account tonight I see there has been a significant change to my award flight PER-JNB, codeshare with SA. Originally it was to depart at 11.20am; now 11.50pm. The downside is I'm travelling Y; the upside is the aircraft has AVOD.

i) Does anyone have any experience with the A346 on SA?
ii) Given the significant change am I entitled to a refund (of points) without penalty if I find out my accommodation booked for that night is non-refundable?
iii) Pending the response to (i), because of the significant change is there a chance QF would let me take their QF63 SYD-JNB service and waive the additional 12000 points? At least I'd get use the FLounge and travel during the day (my preference when no in J).

Changes to award flights have always been difficult. I would never book an award flight if there was any possibility of having to change it.

Qantas is simply telling you the fare rules of the fare you have. Did you enquire as to whether if you cancel and rebook there is award availability?

One option is to buy a ticket on the AA webiste back to whereever it is that you want to go back to.

AA economy flights are fairly cheap.

Good luck.
