So i am flying Mel-BKK-Mel later this month. I need to extend my stay so need to change my flight home by about 4 days. When i booked it was prior to the new fare structures of JQ.

Now when i want to change, if i want to keep the points and SC earning (which i do) the change fee home is a few hundred dollars?!!? Is this fair / allowed? Or if i called JQ would they let me change and keep the Business Max without the additional charges?

Jetstar *should* be trying to charge you the "fare difference", not a "change fee".

You fare conditions will have changed from StarClass to Business Max, at least, that's what they did to my upcoming booking.

The rules for changing a Business Max fare are:

Permitted upon payment of the applicable Fare Difference within Change Deadline.

I just had a look through the old Starclass rules and they appear to be the same as the new Business Max.

Unfortunately the fare difference won't be insignificant. Business Max cost quite a bit more than Starclass did right across the board.

Sorry I couldn't give you a more helpful answer. :(
