Could someone please tell me if the amount of points required for a classic Reward flight be changed the closer you book to your departure date? I've been told that they become more the later you leave it to book.

Welcome to AFF Jana, no the amount of FF points required to redeem a classic award flight does not change as you have been told.

Welcome Jana. MY experience is that it doesn't change.

Welcome Jana to AFF

Thank you. My friend needed around 24000 points for a short domestic flight and was charged 70000!!!!! After consulting with the airline was told that the points increased due to the closeness of her departure. Booked last week for travel on the 23rd. Does this seem right?

Welcome aboard Jana

Which airline was this? And is it possible that your friend booked a Points + Pay (QF) or Any Seat (VA)? Both can be significantly more expensive than a reward seat.

It sounds to me like they booked with Points Plus Pay. This essentially involves converting the cash airfare (which can become more expensive closer to the departure date) to points at a very poor rate.

Classic rewards are usually much cheaper (in terms of points required) and have fixed prices. The only risk with leaving it until a late date to book is that the allocated award seat/s on the flight may sell out.

Welcome to AFF Jana!

Sounds like classic awards were not available.

Definitely not. This is not how classic awards works.

You may need to provide some further information before an informed answer can be provided.

Which airline? Which route? Was it a classic type award flight or was it a points + pay booking? The answers to these questions will provide the information needed to determine whether or not it sounds right or not.
