Hello, this is complex but so many people on here know so much I figured I might get a more sensible answer here than by going to Sri Lankan Airlines office here in Galle. Here is my story:

I am Australian. We travelled to Singapore one way on Scoot Biz (@$435 why not). I then bought a business class return fare Singapore - Colombo -Singapore USING POINTS . I used the first half and am now in Sri Lanka. After I return to Singapore I have an onwards return flight on Emirates Singapore to Melbourne also on points .

With Coronavirus getting worse and an immune compromised 74 year old travelling companion I am thinking I'd rather skip Singapore and come back straight from Colombo to Melbourne. I know I can cancel the points based SIN_MEL booking on Emirates with relatively minor penalty so that's not the issue. What I am wondering is could I change the CMB-SIN to CMB-MEL and pay the difference? I realise this is almost certainly too much to ask, but thought I'd see if anyone on here had had similar experiences. TIA for any advice.

Only if there is points availability on CMB-MEL.
Then you could cancel the CMB-SIN for the cancellation fee (typically 6000 pts)

Depending on how you feel about Malaysia as a transit point instead, you could also look for CMB-KUL-MEL availability too.

Thanks folks. As it turns out, I got in touch with Qantas (amazing) on FB Messenger and i can’t change the second leg of the -Sin-CMB-SIN flight, which is not unexpected. So I either just pay cash for CMB-MEL and cancel the SIN-MEL losing 6k points, or try to get onto CMB -MEL on points. The latter is what I’m working on at the moment but you can’t book that online, which is a hassle because getting through to Qantas on the phone for a points booking at the moment is nigh on impossible.

Yes, thanks. I know, but it’s always a slight risk and with someone from Singapore (British) having flown back from SIN and infected people at some ski lodge in France and other P2P infections in SIN I’m wary. Just that i was hospitalised in Singapore once with pneumonia - no intention of doing that again if I can help it, and that‘s not even considering my 74 yo travel partner with chest issues. Just thinking the gamble isn’t worth it As we were going to stay at Changi for the night.
