Hi folks,

Hoping you can help me out. Need to fly the fiances parents from Calgary to Mel in Jan and wondering if anyone has got some good prices for this time. Looking to leave Calgary around the 3/4 Jan and leave Mel around 15/16 of Jan.

Cheapest I could find was Air China for about $1503AUD but the preference would be Air Canada (YYC -> YVR -> SYD -> MEL) and the cheapest i could find for the route was $1895 return.

Anyone know of any better deals or cheaper prices I could get for the above? Thanks

Not really a great time for cheap fares (early January).

My advice would be to leave it for 2-3 months and see what turns up. If a second GFC is really going to happen, you might think that airfares could go down too.

I would think that's a pretty good deal personally.

Although I just saw Toronto-Sydney return for under $1000 pre taxes.... Not sure what dates though.

Could you please point me to a link cause that is a pretty good deal.

I think the deal must have expired - I received it on my Air Canada email special last week, which was a repeat of the special that was a few weeks earlier....

So keep your eye out - it might come back

Being a canuck living down under I constantly am looking for good deals between OZ and the homeland, and alas they are few and far between.

Air Canada is most of the time more expensive than routing through the US, but they have the advantage of not having to clear US customs with the only non stop between Canada and OZ.

I recently bought a ticket from YYZ to LAX, and a separate one on Air New Zealand LAX - SYD (via AKL) which worked out around the $1200CAD return mark. Not bad, and might work for you as NZ fly to MEL via AKL as well. NZ do fly direct from YVR to AKL but when I checked their prices were prohibitively expensive.

V Australia and QF also fly out of LAX direct to MEL so check them out. As from YYC to LAX I think you have Westjet who might have something affordable given that it's winter?

Good luck!

YYZ-SYD - $825 ex taxes - this week's websaver!

Thanks for the link dfcatch. Although not for their travel period I've bookmarked it for future reference.

Update: Managed to get them on YYC->YVR->SYD->MEL return for $1773USD. Pretty good fare and the carrier/route that they wanted so can't really complain especially given they're flying in peak time. Many thanks to all the input and helpful suggestions provided.

Sounds like a good deal too :)

I think $1895 is probably not to bad, I'd prefer that myself than saving $400 on Air China.

Same with me but they weren't too keen on the long layovers in Beijing even with the free hotel accom for layovers of 8+ hours.

Another option to consider is buying miles and booking award flights...

You can ask the question on the specific Dividend Miles thread on AFF, but the star alliance partner award rate requires 80,000 miles to get from US/Canada to South Pacific return and US Airways have a special deal out where you can buy up to 50,000 miles and get 50,000 miles for free (till 15 September i think). Air Canada is also part of Star Alliance so they could fly them from Toronto.

You only need 80,000 and the price for that is US$1100 on US Airways site (US Airways | Buy miles)... Of course if you really wanted to impress whoever is flying over 110,000 miles will get business class... :) You would then need to factor in taxes and the people on the Dividend Thread maybe able to help you out with a ball park figure or where you might be able to get more info but if they were only in the range of $400 or less it would be a pretty good deal...

Not sure what the cost would end up as, but i am thinking of purchasing some of these points myself with the special...
