Hello,

We are first time Europe travellers and are looking for cheap flights from Germany (perhaps Frankfurt) to Perth at the end of September/October (between the dates of 29 September to 3 October).

Any information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Danielle & Joel

Welcome D & J.

Do you only need the flights one-way (i.e. one-way from Germany to Perth)? Does it matter who you fly?

Note that sometimes (not all the time) a one-way flight will cost more (either entirely or on a per-flight basis) than a return.

In any case, have you tried punching in for a few results on some carrier websites, e.g. Qantas, Lufthansa, Singapore, etc.

Hi anat0l,

Yes, we are needing the flights only one way - and we do not care who we fly with as long as we can get home safe & sound!

We have a had a quick look at some sites, but posted a note to hear from experienced travellers to get their thoughts & opinions as to what they think is best. Will compare the sites you have mentioned - thanks for listing a few.

Any further feedback is more than welcome.

Danielle

Well a very quick search using ITA and checking on some websites yields the cheapest options buying from QF or BA. This is a QF flight from Frankfurt (FRA) to Singapore (SIN), then a connecting QF flight from Singapore (SIN) to Perth (PER).

Cost is EUR 871 per person (at current exchange rate, about AUD 1220), so about AUD 2500 all up for both of you, give or take. Dates around Sep 30 are OK. Not a completely horrid price, either. Although this is not the cheapest option, at least you can book it all in one hit and one ticket, which equates to much peace of mind (at least, in the eyes of many who have frequented the forums of late).

An alternative, if you are so inclined, is to consider Air Asia X (D7). They fly London-Stanstead (STN) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL), then a connecting Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Perth (PER). A quick online search gives a cost of two adults travelling one-way STN-KUL-PER on Sep 30 costs GBP 940 all-up (includes taxes), or about AUD 1500. Now to that figure you would need to add (for both flights) costs of checked luggage, meals and amenities bought on board, and the cost of a flight to get from Germany to London Stanstead for two people. But it's still no where near AUD 2500, however this is budget travel - you need to adjust your expectations accordingly.

Keeping on the Air Asia and budget theme, you can do even cheaper if you can get yourself from Germany to Paris-Orly Airport (ORY). Two adults on Sep 30 flying ORY to KUL one-way is EUR 612 (or AUD 860) all-in, adding on a KUL-PER sector the next day, which is MYR (Malay Ringgit) 971, or AUD 320 all-in. Add that up and total cost is just about AUD 1200 for both of you, all-in but you must add checked baggage, meals, amenities and connecting flights from Germany.

Yet another alternative is airberlin. They run some services from cities in Germany (notably Berlin) to Asia, but mainly through codeshare agreements. Their one-way fare is not too bad, e.g. Sep 30, 2 adults, Berlin to Singapore on a codeshare operated by Finnair (Berlin-Helsinki-Singapore) going for EUR 1200 for 2 adults, or AUD 1700. You can tack on a cheap fare to PER from SIN onto that, and perhaps come out cheaper than you would booking with QF or BA.

That should get you started.... ;)

When do you need to book by? It takes 45,000 AA miles to get an award flight from Europe to South Pacific flying a OneWorld Airline...

At the mo you can buy up to 40,000 AA miles for $1,000 through the American Airlines website plus there will probably be a $30 booking fee and a few taxes and charges (although I have heard they are minimal)... that would allow you to hopefully leave from whatever airport in Germany you want and you don't have to pay for meals or baggage or connecting flights to an airport out of which an LCC carrier flies...

Only problem is that leaves you 5,000 miles short for the award, but there was a recent promotion just finished where you could get a certain amount of bonus miles that would take you up over that 45,000 miles figure for $1,000... Hopefully another such promotion will occur before too long???

Anyway, more experienced people than me here can maybe provide more advice and talk about availability of seats... Just thought I'd chuck it in....

Alternatively even cheaper, one way Frankfurt to Perth (via Singapore) is 56,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points (plus some recently increased taxes and charges of maybe $100-200)... Frankfurt to Singapore is 42,000 points (with a cheap LCC carrier down to Perth)... depending on your inclination to take out credit cards and your annual pay etc, there is a Citibank Platinum credit card i think offer at the moment for $300 approx that will give you 50,000 QFF points (think the offer closes end of March?), various other credit card offers that cost less but will provide fewer points or insurance policies from One Path that (hopefully?!?!) combined might be able to give you 40,000 points for a fairly minimal outlay... look at some of the strategies on this site for earning those sorts of points...

bit of food for thought anyway....

If you have a look at Jetabroad.com.au you can travel from FRA-PER on 29.09.11 (QF6/QF78) for $A1147 after $25 cashback using paypal. The present fare for June is only $1018 so the September fare for a later booking may come down slightly (but equally if problems in the middle east persist then it could rise).
Have a good trip!

Another option to consider is Air Berlin from Berlin to coughet, and Virgin Blue (Pacific Blue) from coughet to Perth. I haven't worked out the costs/schedules, but considering we're using relatively low cost airlines and with just 1 stop, it might work out cheaper.

You can replace coughet with Bangkok and fly Thai Airways from Bangkok to Perth too.

Here's something a little bit different, but feasible.

Fly Emirates Rome to Jakarta for $584. Cheap LCC flight Frankfurt (Hahn) to Rome. Cheap Jetstar flight from Jakarta to Perth.

Easy.
