It's no secret that paying for J fares ex-Oz is a rort and it's much cheaper to fly via Asia. I thought I would post what I have found recently in case anyone else is planning a trip.
We are flying into CDG and out of LHR in September flying Qatar ex-BKK for $2870. This is a great price IMO, especially considering it's a multi-stop. I've never flown Qatar but have been wanting to do after reading great reviews - plus I only look at J flat bed airlines.
Another option is flying to KUL (on the great value Air Asia Premium for around $1400) and then to Europe return on Oman for about $3000. I think that price was in & out of CDG, from memory.

I'm sure there a heaps of options and I think the savings are worth it if your are paying cash for J flights. Qatar from MEL is usually $8-9k (!) and they recently had a special for just over $7k. I can spend the money I've "saved" on shopping when I get there.

I heard someone on here say it was much cheaper to fly QR J out of Manila instead of BKK for some strange reason!

As fares change all the time it's difficult to get reliable information on what is current. The only way is to do the hard yards yourself and work your way around different airline websites for the timings you want. I have seen QR to Europe for as low as $2600 AUD in J class ex-SIN, but not often.

Flying Sri Lankan airlines in J to Frankfurt ex-BKK is $1560 return :-)
Flying KLM in J to AMS ex-BKK (or ex-TPE) often have good deals of under $3000 return
Flying CX ex-TPE often has good deals.

Yes QR out of MNL is routinely US$2400 in J for any date of travel (plus you get to enjoy the J leg for quite a bit longer). Main trouble is the cost of positioning flights from Aus and the somewhat ordinary MNL airport. DPS is also cheap (about US$3400-3600 (depending on dates and when you book), but cheaper to position, better connections (if wanting to continue direct) and much closer to Aus (6 hours vs 9-11 hours).

EY is quite good for this too, because it seems an open jaw BKK-FRA-MEL will be not too much more than doing BKK-FRA return.

e.g. it was 130720THB ($4.1k) open jaw v 93200THB ($2.9k) BKK-FRA return 24/6 out, 24/7 return. This saves on a positioning flight and several hours transiting through BKK on the way back. Use Jetstar for a cheap MEL-BKK flight.
