I am looking at flying from Melbourne to Manchester in September - what are some cheap airlines that could take me there? I don't want to spend more than $2200ish return in economy.

I have done a little bit of research and found Air China. Has anyone flown with them before??

A quick look (cheapest flights in Sept for 14 night stay) on ITA (matrix.itasoftware.com in case you haven't heard of it before!) shows you can travel on a V Australia codeshare operated by Etihad for $1909, Qatar for $1962, Emirates for $2000 and Singapore airlines (SQ) for $2005.. (MEL-SIN-MUC-MAN and back)

These are currently available fares of course... and will change..

I know nothing about Etihad or Qatar, (anyone??) and would probably avoid the 10 across Economy (Y) seating on the Emirates 777.

I am also used to crediting to the Star Alliance program I belong to so I would likely take the SQ option.. AND pay for an exit row seat on the longest leg.. SIN-MUC..

I've only flown relatively short flights on CA (Air China) and that was in Business class. Pretty basic AND I don't think any of the flights operated on time... I would be ...reluctant to fly long haul with them in Y unless the price differential was pretty huge!

Just my 2 cents...

Also try Skyscanner and Farecompare.

Looking on Skytrax, both QR and VA get favourable reviews for their Y product. QR reputedly has a 34" pitch and 19" wide seats on their 77Ls, which would make the journey tolerable...

Unlike CA, CZ et al...

Yes, the 10 across on EK is particularly nasty. But, you can snag the 2-4-2 section at the rear of a 777 and that is a bit nicer. Of course, it takes you 15 minutes more to get off the aircraft.

Emirates is quite unpleasant in Y generally, and I should know, as I am EK Gold.

And to save money (if you're interested in that), fly a LCC to SIN and buy a ticket to Europe from there. Can save you hundreds of $$$.

I would not use EK in Y, service isnot very good (trying to keep it clean). Look at Etihad, they have a 2-4-2 config into Man I believe.
