Will be flying UA to the US and domestically within the US later this year. I was wondering with my VA Gold status if I would get checked luggage even on economy tickets with UA, particularly on the domestic legs e.g SFO-ORD?

Additionally there is a hack. If you are over the checked limit and If the bag that you want to check can fit through the X-ray machine for carry ons, you can do a gate check. This usually free - just take it to the gate and ask to gate check it. They will tag it and you leave it at the aircraft door. Someone will take it into the hold and you pick it up from the carousel at the next stop - don't do if your flight has an intermediate stop
