Rummaging through my boxes of goodies, I happen to find four (!) Hong Kong Octopus cards. I haven't used these since moving from Macau back in November 2007. Is there a validity period on these cards? or is there some way of checking the value still on them?

I am likely to be travelling to HKG next month, and it'd be great if I could use the value on these to get around rather than having to buy another one.

There are top up machines at HKG airport - you can check the balance there. AFAIK credits do not expire.

FAQ - Octopus Hong Kong
If I do not use my Octopus for some time, will it still work?
If you have not added value to your Octopus for 1,000 days or above, your Octopus will be deactivated. You can go to any Customer Service Centre at MTR stations to have it reactivated free of charge.

James, Maca,

Thanks for that! sounds promising. I have no idea what the value left on them are, I'll take them all and see I can combine them..

Quite painless. I had it done a month or so ago.

Living in Macau sounds nice!

Go to the service counter at HKG airport, and they'll sort it all out for you.

I only "lived" there for four months setting up a project there. It certainly is a nice place, especially if you can get away from the casinos. Much less hectic than HK too. Not sure what its like now though.
