My sister's off to SIN for the first time and is looking for suggestions for a good Chilli Crab. While I've been there plenty of times it's been a while since my last visit.

Any good suggestions?

Try the food markets on the road to the airport. On the left hand side travelling to the airport. Any of the stalls there do a good chilli crab!

I think you will find the food centre`s are on the right side GOING to the airport (East Coast Food Centre).

Another place is the "Lau Pau Sat" food centre in the CBD, they also close one of the streets off after dark and turn it into a parade of hawker stalls.

If you like "Chicken Rice" go to "Maxwell Food Centre" just off the China town area and go to stall number 10 (Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice), its the best in Singapore (IMO), expect long queue`s of locals (a good sign !). Best time to go is around lunch time as I have found on a couple of occasions they shut up shop late afternoon.

Kind regards, Traveller F

I have been to "no signboard seafood" down at the esplanade a couple of times as my usual haunt is the Swissotel Stamford. Reasonable food, easy to get to on public transport (MRT)
They have a couple of branches.

oh yes, order some fried and steamed buns to soak up the gravy.....:)

East Coast Park Hawker Centre (LHS heading from Airport) is my favourite place for chili crab.

(I think it's also been referred to as "East Coast Food Centre" in this thread)

East Coast Seafood Centre (slightly up the road) has some nice seafood restaurants. "No Signboard Seafood" is there, along with other seafood restaurants.

After my chili crab, I eat oodles of satay sticks, washing both them with Tiger and/or Heineken.

In fact, I was thinking the other day about heading to SIN for a food fest one weekend soon (on that Singapore Airlines deal).

Clark Quay as i recall, near the bridge. Dont forge to wash it down with a gutfull of Tiger.

Check with any good hotel con, for up to date info.

Hmm, given how cheap it is to get there from PER, it's tempting...

Long Beach UDMC Seafood Restaurant at the East Coast Seafood Centre is my favourite. Most places at East Coast Seafood Centre are pretty good if you talk to cabbies or locals they will each have a opinion to who is best. IMO eating elsewhere is not as good, last place I went to for crab was at "No Sign Board" at Vivo city it was pretty average.

Easy, any restaurant with live crab will be good. My experience is in the Clarke Quay area, sitting on the floating restaurant barge (addition to the quay) eating crab, drinking ice cold heineken (on ice in a bucket) looking at the lights, taking in the sounds, watching the water taxis go by, priceless (until the next morning that is ;))

Bring on September SIN F1 GP, I can't wait for dinner!

I would vote for ECP - try Jumbo for Chili Crab, Pepper Crab and Drunken Prawns.

Otherwise ask a local for their recommendations, but at Clarke Quay I would prefer the Satay Club (just a street full of hawkers) and then go to Hooters for some pitchers of beer and a laugh.

The Quays are good if you are on an expense account and like a view with dinner, as are some of the ECP restaurants and both are good experiences, otherwise the local hawker centres are much better value especially with the beer, and dont forget some of the other well known dishes, Pepper Crab and Chicken Rice are must do's if you have not had them!

If you prefer the tourist places, I last ate at Jumbo at ECP and it was very good for both types of Crab (we had a banquet) and I also recommend some already mentioned, here is the URLs of some of them:

Palm Beach Seafood Restaurant
No Signboard Seafood Restaurant Singapore - The Name U Named
Seafood Paradise :: Our Outlets
Jumbo
Long Beach

+1 with East Coast Parkway :)

Make sure you dip complimentary 'man tau' (aka sweet bread) into the (sweet'ish) chilli sauce that comes with the crab.

Definately.

Expense Account - Quays.
Tourist without much local experience - restaurant.
More adventurous tourist - Hawker centre.

Last time I was in SIN, (Feb IIRC), I paid about $SG30 for the chillli crab, $SG5 for 10 pieces of satay, and I think $SG7 for bottles of Heineken/Tiger at the hawker centre.

I think we paid about $SG16 for a jug of Tiger at Lau Pa Sat

No Signboard Seafood, hmmm was there in May with hubby, huge mud crab in front of him, juices dripping down his arms, splatter all over his shirt, big grin on his face  gets my vote, I had the drunken prawns, and was very happy with them, and I stole a mud crab claw :p
