needing to book some flights USA - SYD in early january, with an open return date. Everything at the moment is coming back at upwards of $2,700 in Y. Last year i booked similar flights coming to SYD just before new years, departing 2nd week of Jan for $2,000. i.e. about 30% less.

besides the usual, book as far in advance as possible etc, what is the likelihood of qantas/ virgin releasing new sale fares before the end of the year? Would it be best to suck it up and book some flights now with the hope a sale fare comes online in between? reading the recent experiences in the qantas thread about credit vouchers makes me a little uneasy going down this route

cheers
