I'm looking for return flights over the Christmas period and was astonished to find that China Airlines are selling business class fares through ctrip for HK$2,727 - astonishing when CX economy is over HK$4k!

The fare books into D class and is on an A330. Has anyone tried CI J on the A330? What's it like?

I'm also wondering how it would go in terms of crediting to a SkyTeam partner - perhaps one of the programmes offering lifetime status?

CI operate a couple of versions of the A330 - and substitutions on that route are probably common anyway. The seats are a sort of recliner/angled-flat hybrid (not quite angled flat, but slightly more than a recliner).

It's only a bit over an hour. Seating probably not much of an issue.

i never ended up trying CI when I was in HK but they were always the go-to airline for cheap tickets on holiday dates given the huge amounts of capacity on HKG-TPE.

They were insanely cheap! They used to have a TPE-HKG-BKK flight, operated by a 747. Tickets HKG-BKK were AUD160 return. As they used the first class section for business class, you could score a business class seat on the upper deck for the economy fare. While the food was economy class, the rest of the catering - pillows, blankets, headsets, and most importantly the bar (with the exception of champagne) - was all business class.

There is one reason why it is so cheap: people don't want to fly with them.

CI's past history of crashes turned me off completely flying with them. For such as short route like HKG-TPE I would fly CX or KA everyday.

Also it is a good route to use your QFF points as it is only 10K one way on Y or 18K in J, considering that CX/KA fares to TPE is expensive.

If you have BAEC Avios, it is even better: 4.5K for Y and 9K for J one-way.

you have a point from a western perspective but it isn't quite as cut and dry in greater china - CI is the biggest carrier in Taiwan and they are profitable, people will fly them even knowing they have had issues in the past. that being said it has been 15 years since they had a fatality on a flight and there are now many other players in Asia I would put well behind them for risking a flight on :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. If I decide to book CI I will let you know how I find the experience.
