I am finalising a LONE4 and will be crediting to QF (currently bronze only). My schedule is pretty much fixed although I have a segment or two available to play with. I have priced this with the online booking tool with AA (priced in MEL-SYD on AA) and QF and will certainly be booking via AA to avoid the extra QF fines of ~$1400AUD. I am looking at the following:

SYD-JNB-MRU-JNB-(surface)-CPT-LHR-DBX-LHR-YVR-JFK-MIA-ORD-LAX-AKL-SYD

I would prefer to avoid BA where possible and have noticed some BA/AA Codeshare options on Iberia and Qantas such as:

LHR-DBX on IB7624 and rtn on IB7573
LHR-YVR on IB7617
ORD-LAX on QF3164

They could not be selected using the online booking tool as I assume they could only be purchased with a connection to/from Madrid or onto Australia/NZ.

Has anyone had any luck booking these type of codeshares or codeshares on Finnair where there are no connections to/from Spain/Finland/Aus? If so was this via the AA RTW desk?

Sorry I can't answer your question, but curious to know what you want to avoid BA or AA flight numbers.

If I understand things correctly the QF points earn rate on BA and AA flight numbers is less than on Iberia/Finnair? If so I was hoping an IB/AY codeshare, even if on AA or BA metal, would earn the higher rate. If this is not the case and the earn rate is based on the metal flown then it would make things easier for me and my question becomes irrelevant.

Avoiding AA I can understand, but +1 on why no BA?

I'd be doing the opposite - avoiding IB from what i'm told......

I'm no expert, but I would think you can ticket it to any carrier operating the flight that has a flight number assigned (ie. If IB offer a Flight number on say a BA aircraft, you should be able to ticket it IB)

I think you're correct re the L class earning as a Bronze on a LONE4 to QFF...AA @ 0.5 per mile flown and BA at a miserable 0.25 per mile flown, whereas IB and AY flight numbers will get you 1 to 1, no matter the metal.

My understanding (may not be correct) is that if you are on a OWE there are no restrictions re connections and legs flown. If it's OW, and L is available, then within OWE rules its fair game.

Just a matter of finding the best fit...good luck with it! :)

I once chose to fly long haul on IB on a LGLOB in preference to BA because of the 1:1 point earn rather than 0.25:1

Never again. I'd rather miss out on the points.

+1 for what docjames has said -- Avoid IB.

Thanks for the replies on this one.

I have been on IB a few times and am the first to admit that they are not exactly a carrier of choice although personally they still rate higher than United.....

However, all the IB/QF codeshare flights are on BA/AA metal so it is simply a case of specifying an IB/QF flight number to gain 1 QFF point per mile instead of 0.25 or 0.5. This seemed too easy and a bit 'sneaky' to me and I was concerned that I could only use the codeshares with a connecting international flight. If this is not the case I will be delighted as I may escape bronze for the first time although I am still waiting on the bad news from someone who has been there and tried that without success:rolleyes:

No bad news at all - for xONEx's, oneworld codeshares on oneworld metal are all generally eligible (subject to traffic/tariff conditions not related to xONEx rules).

These rules are specific and can be found here:
And to quote the actual text:
4. FLIGHT APPLICATION/ROUTINGS
...
(i) Travel on any AA/AY/BA/CX/IB/JC/JL/JO/ KA / LA/LP/MA/NU/QF/RJ/XL/4M codeshare service operated by AA/AY/BA/CX/EG/IB/JC/JL/JO/ KA / LA/LP/MA/NU/QF/RJ/XL/4M is permitted. Other codeshare services not permitted.
... enjoy :D

ORD-LAX is valid on the QF flight number since you are taking QF onto Australia/New Zealand

For other codeshares, you will need to check since many codeshares do have sales restrictions; I would be surprised if you could book IB from LHR-DXB/YVR without a connection to or from Spain for example

Thanks Serfty & Dave

I have checked the xONEx's rulesd a few times in the past and there was nothing specific that would rule out the codeshares. However several threads have raised doubts as to the validity of an IB codeshare on BA metal from LHR-DBX with no connection to/from Madrid as an example.

How would I find out if this is possible before calling the AA RTW desk or is that the best course of action?

Given that the IB flight number only appears in the OW electronic timetable when in conjunction with travel to/from Spain, I think that it is unlikely to be valid

I would suggest phoning the ATW desk and seeing if it is permitted

Excellent point - I didn't even think of that. I've only ever flown BA in J (LHR/JFK flights) and AA on QANTAS codeshare when in Y. Thanks for the response.
