I love photography but in this field I am totally untechnical.

I had an iphone XR then upgraded to a 12 mini.

When I take photos of the same thing on the XR the image size is about 3.2MB and on the 12 mini it's 705kb.

I would have thought that a later phone would make the image sizes larger and make better photos.

Am I correct or does image size not equate to better quality

Thanks

What format are they using? Maybe one is standard JPG and the other in the newer HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Format)?

Both say JPG
Is that after you have transferred them to your laptop or other device. HEIC was introduced with iOS 11 and is a file compression method to use less storage on your device. This can be be changed in Settings>camera>formats.

Yes -after they are on my PC. I've found that setting so will take some photos tomorrow to compare. I'd do it tonight but there's wine ;)

Thanks
