Flights from Hobart using Velocity points to;

L.A - 94,000 & $800 in taxes

London - 125,000 & $120 in taxes.

Compared to the distance, the London flight looks better value.

But also, can someone please advise me why the $$$ amount you have to pay is so much more with the trip to the U.S, compared to the U.K? :confused:

The LOndon flights are probably with Etihad who doesnt have fuel surcharges.

But considering the London PAX tax now, that still seems low. I wouldn't imagine that EY or VA would be willing to absorb those costs?

I just booked LA one way on VA in J and it was $400 in taxes and 96k points. I consider that a far better use of points than economy (even though I have since found out the sale fares around at the moment are around $5k return in J on VA, QF and NZ).

I would've said YQ diff too, except I thought VA have no YQ (normally integrated into base fare via Q charge), unless the Q charge is brought out for awards.

Did the OP try getting a tax breakdown to see where the discrepancy is?

If EY charges no YQ, then does that mean if the LHR itinerary was flown to AUH using VA (then connecting to EY to LHR), the taxes++ would be higher?

EDIT: OK what am I missing...damn I need to get to a computer...

Sure does. Their award booking engine is no longer working but IIRC using VA for SYD-AUH instead of EY one way added $300+ in taxes.
