If I call up today and redeem a flight for say sometime in October, but I cancel the card in a few days, will my flights still be all good ?

I actually was not going to redeem the flight because to be honest I forgot about it (was reminded by Amex when I cancelled by DJs card last week) and had no other travel needs domestically that wasn't already booked but something's come up in BNE in the second week of Oct.

Thanks.

Also is there a requirement that the taxes and surcharges component be paid in cash or does Amex cover this ?

Unless T&C's changed recently I always thought that by redeeming the flight you agreed to the annual renewal fee which appeared on your next statement. (For QF Amex)

And I thought that by paying the annual fee you were entitled to the flight :p

Its included in the annual fee for the current year.
Not contingent on signing for a subsequent year...if that was the case, who would actually take the offer up because at some point in time, you will lose.

Cheers
