Sometimes Qantas customer service makes you smile!

I have a booked flight from JNB to MEL in late October, in T class. Logging onto CMT today, I noticed a warning about a schedule change, with a the old flight listed as cancelled and new, identical, flight substituted with a change of fare class into Business (I). I called customer service and they told me that the 744 was now being sold as a two-class service, and I was offered a (non-transferable) upgrade on the flight! :)

I then decided to push my luck, and asked for a seat reassignment, which I was promptly given - to 4A!

So I have gone from PE service in a PE seat, to J service in an F seat, with J SCs and points, all off a discount PE ticket. Thanks Qantas!

I've had this happen a few times (PE not available due to aircraft substitution). I've always got J service, but PE FF points and SCs.

Maybe you are right; I am assuming that J level SCs will credit as I am now actually booked in a J fare bucket:

Status: Confirmed
Class: Business (I)
Seat Selections: 4A
Flight Duration: 12h 45m

Did it show something similar when you were upgraded but only awarded PE SCs?

It may change to a U booking class 24 hours before the flight, as happened to someone else on AFF recently (although I can't recall whether his was a points upgrade... rather than an op-up).

Yes - I was always rebooked in I

It shows up as an upgrade in my QFF statement. I found one example:

06 MAR 09 QF 012 PREMIUM ECONOMY/BUSINESS 05MAR09 LOS ANGELES/SYDNEY
UPGRADE REF 3KZPN9 7,491 750 7,491 15,732 90
