I'm a bit confused by the receipt/e-ticket for a points booking I made today.

The Amount Due on the payment screen was $41.86

The Amount Paid on the receipt was $42.36, the card payment fee shown was $0.45 (was actually charged $0.50)

The receipt also has another amount "Ticket Charges" which is a mystery to me. It wasn't taken from my CC, only the $42.36 was.

So, why is the CC charge different to what was paid, and what is the "Ticket Charge" of $200.77 that was never deducted?

Maybe the credit card will be charged a bit later - IME it can take a day or so, even to show up as pending before being done?
But the question should be why are you paying with Visa and not Amex?! 🙂

You can’t just add on $200 after the final payment screen showing “Total Amount Summary” shows $42.36 and the cc payment is processed!

I don’t have an AMEX so that could be a reason.🤓

Based on the **Some/all of this Booking paid for using Frequent Flyer Points, I'm thinking that at least one flight is a points+pay redemption rather then a classic reward? In that case the $200 could be the amount covered by your points.

Was this classic reward? I wonder if this is indicative of how much QF Loyalty pays QF for these seats.

Yes it was. The return was a discounted points+pay red-e deal (would not normally do points+pay but the current discount means its not too bad) as no classic rewards available. What I don't understand is why the receipt has a $ value+GST for the points when the $ value+GST is not charged. That means I could claim the GST of $20.14 which was never actually paid, despite the receipt stating it was (in the Tax Information section).

GST is charged for domestic flights, regardless of the form of payment

The default points plus pay rate is a straight 0.6c/point normally however this value moves when you start messing with the slider. At the moment the going rate is 0.857c/point because of the 30% discount.

The breakdown is as follows:

MEL-BNE classic reward:

0 AUD base fare
14.00 AUD fuel fine
24.05 AUD airport taxes/fees
3.81 AUD GST

Total 41.86 AUD + 12000 points

Visa card payment fee 0.45 AUD + 0.05 AUD GST = 0.50 AUD

Total card charge 42.36 AUD

BNE-MEL commercial fare using points:

138.67 AUD base fare
24.05 AUD airport taxes/fees
16.28 AUD GST

Total 179.00 AUD paid for using 20884 points at 0.857c/point (normally 29834 points at 0.6c/point)

So, the 221.36 AUD that QF claims you paid is made up of:

41.86 AUD taxes/GST/fuel fine on the MEL-BNE
0.50 AUD card payment fee (inc 0.05 AUD GST)
179 AUD on the BNE-MEL (base fare/taxes/GST)

Total 221.36 AUD

The 20.14 AUD GST that QF claims you paid is made up of:

3.81 AUD GST on the fuel fine/airport taxes and fees on the MEL-BNE
0.05 AUD GST on the card payment fee
16.28 AUD GST on the base fare/airport taxes and fees on the BNE-MEL

Total 20.14 AUD

The 200.77 AUD "total" without GST that QF claims you paid is made up of:

14.00 AUD fuel fine on the MEL-BNE
24.05 AUD airport taxes/fees on the MEL-BNE
138.67 AUD base fare on the BNE-MEL
24.05 AUD airport taxes/fees on the BNE-MEL

Total 200.77 AUD

Essentially you paid for the 179 AUD commercial fare for BNE-MEL with 20884 points converted to cash and then that 'cash' was used to pay for the fare.

I would argue that you can claim the GST due to the fact the points are being converted to a cash value but this is not financial/tax advice. On the classic reward, this does not occur as you are paying directly with points without converting to cash.

I hope this breakdown helps you understand the QF receipt more.

How can I bookmark this post?

I almost feel that a new toaster would have been a funner way of spending the points.
bottom line
MEL-BNE 12000 pts + $42.36
BNE-MEL 20884 pts + $0
