I'm travelling CDG > LAX > SYD > MEL on a Qantas classic rewards booking on Thursday. Air France, Qantas and then the last leg to Melbourne with Jetstar.

arriving in Sydney at 6.30am, my flight to Melbourne departs at 2.50pm (Jetstar). I'm not enthused about the long layover in Sydney and have found some earlier flights (Rex, Virgin) that I could take paying cash.

Will I be able to collect my bags in Sydney and then just no-show the final leg of my itinerary with Qantas? Or will my bags be checked through to final destination being Melbourne?

It shouldn't be an issue.

You have to collect bags on arrival into SYD and go through customs anyway. After ending up landside, simply do your thing.

Yep, your strategy is entirely sensible as long as it’s just a one way booking. Even moreso as you would have to either store your bags or schlep your bags around until 12:50pm when bag check for the domestic Jetstar flight opens.

I would front up at the jetstar counter as soon as you arrive. They may be willing to accommodate you in an earlier flight if there’s room, given you are on a connecting service.

If you want a backup you could buy a refundable fare on say Rex or virgin.

You think? Jetstar not famous for their accommodations, but would be useful insight if they actually do.

You bags will not be checked through to MEL, and QF won't check you in for the flight, so that's not an issue.

This wouldn't be skip lagging, QF won't care if you never check in to the JQ flight. JQd is so insular it would be like anyone else failing to get to the airport before check in closes. They just cancel the booking.

They struggle to accommodate pax when they are at fault, let alone a pax request. Unless it's a flexible booking I don't even think it's worth asking (if it's booked as QF codeshare that might be easier).
