Hi,
I had to book some last minute flights to Bali. Give its three weeks away, the only flights left were with JQ, NTL-CNS-DPS.
JQ895 16:00 - 18:50 &
JQ90 21:30 - 00:20
The connection came up when I searched NTL-DPS, so I took it vs no other options, as its around $1000 minimum for a one way flight around that period. There is a two and a half hour stop in CNS. My question is - do the bags need to be checked in a second time in Cairns, and what happens if the first flight is delayed ? I'll keep searching for other flights, in case something more attractive pops up, this can be cancelled.
What's Cairns like to transfer domestic to international ? I am a QF Gold.

Cheers
LP

If you're transferring between domestic flights or between international and domestic flights, in most cases you’ll need to collect your baggage, check in again and transfer your bags.

Our check-in staff will let you know if your baggage will be transferred. You may still need to check in at the connecting airport to obtain your next boarding pass before check-in closes.

How do I transfer between terminals?

T1 (International) and T2 (Domestic) are connected by a covered walkway. Follow the Blue line from T1 Arrivals to T2 Departures. Follow the Green line from T2 Arrivals to T1 Departures.

Should be ok…….. from the JQ website.

Please be aware that we don’t transfer your baggage between flights. However, there are some exceptions:

  • Connecting international Jetstar flights and flights with our partner airlines (see list below), where both international flights were purchased on the same booking

For all domestic JQ flights your bags must be collected at the other end, regardless.

QF domestic can connect to JQ international and JQ international can connect to JQ international, but not JQ domestic to JQ international.

You'll need to collect your bags in CNS and walk them to the international terminal. It's not far and you have plenty of time. If purchased together JQ will protect your second flight and rebook you if you miss it.

In this case it's basically two one way sectors "connected" by the fare.. so NTL-CNS and CNS-DPS. You'd need to collect bags in CNS and walk over to International. As above, the walk is about 5-10 minutes depending on speed and it's very easy - there's a green (IIRC) line to follow it's all quite easy enough. The only issue is with a delay with the domestic leg, but that 3h transit time should be fair amount of time to cover most usual connections.

No biggie. I've flown into/out of Cairns a few time domestically, so know the layout of the terminals. I wasn't sure if the bags will be checked all the way through, but I guess not, or that is where the expectation is now, so anything better will be an improvement. It would be great if it could be checked, to avoid having to queue up once again.
Is there much facilities airside in Cairns international terminal ?
With transit times, I'm a glass half-empty, so hypothetically, if that flight is delayed severely, what would be the outcome ? Does Jetstar try to accomodate you on any other possible alternatives ? I don't think the CNS-DPS is a daily flight. What would they do in this instance ?

Not sure anymore, check to see what timing the last Qantas flight out of domestic is.
You could walk back to the Domestic Qantas Pub if timings are right.

Set yourself a certain cut off time and if the flight hasn't departed by then and you know that you won't arrive CNS in time to make the connection, ask to be offloaded before you depart NTL and rebooked to fly via ADL/BNE/MEL/SYD instead depending on connections?

Good idea. Do you think the local team would be able to do it on the spot, or redirect to a call centre, and death by a thousand cuts ?

You may have to call Jetstar which is not too bad compared to QF, but best to do your research beforehand on potential flight options...
