Hey all, just after some input..

I am flying into HKG from JNB in a few week on CX 748 which arrives @ 0745.

What do you think my chances are making a 0850 flight on KA. Im flying J and will have checked luggage.

My experience is its pretty quick through the security, but not so confident about checked bags. (It will be checked through to FOC (Final destination).

Thats a long transit in HKG;-). Bags will be no problem. Probably on your plane before you make it there

If your inbound flight arrives on time, no problem. If your inbound flight is 2 hours late, then no chance. Somewhere in between and its anyone's guess. But the facts remain that HKG is one of the most efficient airports when it comes to baggage transfers. Expect a KA agent to meet you at the arrival gate (holding a sign with your connecting flight number and your name) and point you in the right direction for the appropriate transfer point.

I had a tight connection there next Weds. Cathay minimum connection time is 1hr. They should wait for you unless VERY late. Bags - no problem. I changed my flight to an earlier one since I simply MUST be on the night flight to Bangalore for work the following morning

I think the minimum connection time at HKG is 50 minutes (I have done 55 easy).

On time should be no worries, delays will be the problem

Hi,
I wouldn't worry - had a 1hr 5 min connection in HKG enroute to ICN in March - never seen such efficient facilities for transiting pax. Provided you're reasonably on time you'll be set. I think we could have made the actual transiting part in less than 10 minutes, though admittedly we landed fairly close to where the ICN flight was departing. Enjoy the first flight and relax.. no use worrying.

I endorse the above comments; I have done 50 minute connections at HKG with no problems (they were CX->CX, but CX->KA should be similar).

Generally I like to leave 90 minutes between connections even in HKG but I have risked a few 50-55 minute connections in HKG without checked luggage and have made the connection with a few headaches.

If incoming aircraft is late and your next gate is on the other side of the terminal then you literally need to rush to get to the gate.

Have a few tight connections again in a few weeks so will be keeping fingers crossed as any missed connection is likely to mess around with onward flights. I have something like 9 flights in <48 hours.

Have just moved this to the Qantas discussion board. Sorry to awaken the thread from the dead!

Apologies for restarting this thread but it was exactly along the lines of my query...

I am looking to book flights from Australia to London via HKG, using the AU site for the SYD-HKG-SYD sector (I'm based in BNE but all flights go via SYD it seems) and the HKG site for the HKG-LHR-HKG sector (thanks to you clever AFFs for this idea on saving funds). The plan is to book Y ex-AUS and then Y+ ex-HKG, as that is really all my funds will allow me... Travel dates are 10 or 11 Aug from Oz and leaving LHR on 29 August.

Any idea if:
(a) I would be able to link these flights on the same PNR after booking separately?
(b) I took QF87 and then QF29 flights, is the connection time of 1hr 55mins feasible (barring delays) or even something that QF would allow?
(c) these flights have been running on-time lately? There is only one QF flight from HKG-LHR a day it seems so if I miss that one I guess I'd have to wait until the next day...

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out. As usual, I understand all this is dependent on any delays/action from QF or the airport/s.
:)

No problem linking bookings but it does not protect from misconnects.

That is a valid connection.

Just out of curiosity have you tried a dummy booking SYD-LHR to see what flights are listed?

When you have linked your flights QF will be aware that you will be arriving on QF87. You will also get your boarding pass in BNE/SYD earlier in the day so you will be checked in for the flight. If there are enough passengers on a delayed flight connecting to QF29 then they may hold QF29 for a little while. Otherwise as you say there is another flight the next day.

Thanks JohnK!

I appreciate the insight.

I have done a few dummy bookings and they all go via SIN or BKK on the QF booking engine. If I force it with a multi-stop enquiry it gives me an overnight stopover arriving in HKG at 1750 and out at 0735 the next day. Maybe they don't recognise the connection time as viable? Expert Flyer shows the 1:55 ex-SYD connection option and, interestingly, a 1:35 ex-BNE connection. But that is probably not much of an indication I suppose on what the airlines will actually accept.

I am starting to toy with the idea of staying overnight in HKG though, which may make all this moot. I am flying over for a sporting competition and I want to minimise jet lag wherever possible! I've actually been enjoying reading some tips (including having overnight stays) over in this thread actually http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/your-questions/hints-make-y-class-more-31381.html

I will have to look around at what people recommend for hotels in HK too. So many knowledgeable and friendly people on AFF!
