I've seen references in some threads about people contacting the GM of the hotel they're staying at (especially if they're somewhat regular guests) to introduce themselves and build a relationship to ensure better service in the future. I also noticed when staying as SPG Gold at the Westin Macau that the welcome letter encouraged a hello (and some other places - Crowne Plaza Alice SPrings recently from memory).
