Contacting the hotel GM

I've seen references in some threads about people contacting the GM of the hotel they're staying at (especially if they're somewhat regular guests) to introduce themselves and build a relationship to ensure better service in the future. I also noticed when staying as SPG Gold at the Westin Macau that the welcome letter encouraged a hello (and some other places - Crowne Plaza Alice SPrings recently from memory).

Just wondering how many people do this, what they say, what they've received, etc.
