I have 2-3 days in Shanghai with my 10 & 13 girls from 9/12/11. Can members suggest places to go, see and eat at?

I plan on going to the top of the "can opener" buidling for the view and also to the site of the World Expo and getting the personal "tram" under the river to the Bund

Suggestions welcome!:p

If by the can opener (possibly bottle opener? but never heard it called that) the financial tower, yes, go up, pay the extra to go to the very top. If at night, take a tripod and don't use your flash!
Kids would love the copy market. Take the green line to the science museum stop.
Shanghai museum is a must see for all ages and an evening walk along the bund is a must.
Be prepared with some warm clothes as well. It will be quite cold.

Meant the bottle opener. hee hee! By the "Copy Market" what do you actually mean? and where is it? I presume a separate place to teh Science museum?

If you are looking at branded goods also consider the selling price of the authentic brands. My thinking about knockoffs and low value products is as follows:

If the knock off is 10% of the quality but still 50% of the authentic price - then that is not a bargain.
If the knock off is 10% of the quality and 10% of the authentic price then that is good and getting better.

If the authentic product is available in a Shanghai department store for 40-50% of the Oz price, then that is a bargain as you get the quality.

I have previously purchased some branded copies which turned out to be cough and barely make the return trip.

I have a knockoff backpack that I've had for 5 years and it is one of the best backpacks which I got for 10% of the authentic price.

In short, what I am saying is that you can get cheap stuff for cheap prices but the real bargains can be had when you get good products for cheap prices.

Just my 2 yuans worth.

Start off with taking the maglev train from the airport. Amazingly smooth even when travelling at 430km/h.

As others have mentioned the science museum is fantastic. The dancing robots are something special.

I always found the French Concession pretty cool place. With some nice old buildings, quite relaxing.

As far as food goes Shanghai is probably most famous for Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). Lu bo lang restaurant is the most famous restaurant, although you may have to wait. It is located in YuYuan Garden which in itself is worth a visit.

Shanghai is the home of white rabbit candies. You can get the traditional ones easy enough at shops and supermarkets. But you can also get the more unusual variants that are harder to get even in other parts of China.

Great suggestions. the 1st thing we will do is get teh Maglev. I used it last October when visiting teh World Fair!
A must also is teh Yue Century Park. Kind of like Cnetral Park in New Your or Centennial park in Sydney. Hire a bike, go for a run or just stroll. I stopped in a very old part of Shaghai (at night) which was like going back 50 years. small market street with seafood stalls/shops where you could eat fresh seafood at locals prices. Does nayone know the name of this part of town. It wasnt far from the Bund heading back inland away from river??

Yuan Gardens for shopping for little girl cough! close to the copy markets.
yes, top of the financial tower. i have a phobia about towers high, but still did this (not happy Jan), but glad i did it still.
Yes the Bund train under the river is good fun (if you haven't done it a few too many times now), especially for little girls. they will enjoy it. we even took a 15yo, and she enjoyed it.
if you go to the Pavilion of the Expo. go very early.................very stressful otherwise. we went at 1pm and it still took 2 hours to get inside the building, and once we got in, we were so stressed we couldn't wait to get out. On exiting, a Finnish man asked me about how to get in, and i collapsed on his shoulder and said don't do it................you had to be in the right frame of mind, and i wasn't. it's quite worthwhile entering though, it's just the comical line up to get in there that is so frustrating.
just walking down Nanjing Rd towards the Bund is fun. the little girls will love it. when taking 15yo she loved Nanjing Rd, and even went off exploring on her own at night.
don't get conned into Tea Rooms/ Art Galleries/ Silk Museum with any locals who speak very good English. it's all a CON!
