I will be flying MEL-HKG-KUL-HKG-SYD next month all on A330's and have already pre-selected my Y seats for all 4 flights, being a OWE and my +1 is QF PS (OWR) we availed of the free(for OW FFers) exit row seats on 3 out of the 4 flights, row 59, on one of the legs we managed to get row 39 (bulkhead) 1st row of Y.

What are everyone's opinions on row 39 and 59, and what would you choose if you had both as a choice?

Funnily enough I was kind of forced to fly CX by QF's lack of intra-asia options (excluding 'jetstar asia'), even when trying to book the above itinerary via QF sales, the sales person suggested I book my internal flights directly through another airline as their system would only allow them to combine QF flights with CX/MH without it being fully Flexible Y booking class CX/MH fares, so would have been in the many thousands, so had to book CX all the way to get a decent price.. but not all bad I've wanted to try CX out for a long time and now have a chance to plus I still can access the QF First lounge! :)

on long haul 330s (e.g mel-hkg):

row 59 has more leg room than 39 (exit row vs bulk head) however you will get the light from the toilet shining on you and possibly people milling around for toilets (not as bad in the window seats)

row 39 would be best for night sectors/quieter if you don't mind being further from toilets (you will also be first served in Y)

enjoy - the CX 330 product from Oz to HKG is streets ahead of QF 330

i usually book rows 59, yes they're near the toilets but if you've got a good set of noise cancelling headphones & eye mask, you'll be all right for overnigt flights. My selection is seats A, C, H & J.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try and keep an eye out for row 39 if it comes up, as i'd prefer to be away from the toilets.

Is web checkin recommended for CX or just checkin on the day at the airport? I am a OWE so hopefully the First queue is not crowded, i've never used CX so not sure how they busy their checkin gets.

Definetely web check at T-48 as operational upgrades are partly assigned by your BN number (order of check in), make sure your OWE is in your booking too.

Ok thanks will do, yes my OWE and my wife's OWR FF# are on the booking, it doesn't show the status though on the e-ticket, is that normal for CX? Will they still give me proper paper BP's at checkin?
I am guessing it did pick up my status in the background as I was able to select exit rows for free.
