CX HKG-PEK on my QF booking says I'm entitleto 20kg, but on KA on the return leg it just says '1 bag'. With PS (OW Ruby) do CX give any benefits? Also wondering how lenient they are generally - I remember getting 23kg on my last discount economy CX flight, and checked-in 25kg without any issues.

I've flown with 70kg on a ticked that only allowed 30 with no excess. I did get punished when I pushed it to 86kg. YMMV

Yes. Flying J as a OWE. Not something I expect. But it's nice.

When flying J on CX from HKG to SGN I'm usually about 10kg over and about half the time they make me pay. From what I understand although the limit is 20kg in Y, they will allow up to 23kg without charge.

It would be nice of OW had a similar scheme to *A or ST whereby higher tiers get bonus luggage. Saying that, I know AY offer OWE an extra piece!

It sounds like you have a multi-sector itinerary booked with QF. If so, there's a good chance that QF is the 'most significant carrier' and so you can apply the 'most significant carrier' baggage rules. CX upholds the MSC rules. That said, unless you're qualifying flight with QF is in J or F, you'll still be limited to 23kgs.

If you're not familiar with MSC, search for the term on the CX website and it will bring up some information.

I've been told by CX that they allow 23kgs no issue.

MSC (for non USA bookings) applies per journey, not per booking.

If the OP has a 'simple return' to PEK then there are two journies and the MSC may be different for both.

In terms of MSC I fly MEL-SYD-HKG (gotta get on that A380) and have a few days stop over, so PEK I will have to check in again, so I assume MSC won't apply? Equally on the return its PEK-MEL in one hit so checking in at a CX counter in PEK.

Yep - you have three separate - it's possible for each 'journey' to have a different allowance.

Hmmm. Okay. I thought part of the point of MSC was to make it easier for the entire booking, so that when you left home you had a clear idea as to what you're baggage allowance would be.

I stand to be corrected again but if you're flying x-MEL on QF (perhaps HKG-MEL) than you'd be subject to the QF baggage rules under MSC. That said, my understanding is MSC doesn't take into account status allowances for baggage which means that you'll still limited to one piece at 23kgs, unless you're flying in J or higher.

MSC can take status allowances into account if the airlines file these with APTCO - it seems most don't.

If MEL-xSYD-HKG is on QF then MSC rules really do not apply and it's QF for those segments.
