Yeah, I'm shocked how cheap CX is pricing their J fares lately. Makes it impossible to fly anyone else. They have been pricing SYD to LHR in the low 7k's for months now, right through the summer season. I got SYD - MXP for 7k flat return 2 weeks ago for a July travel date.

Guess they can do this because their Y loads are so high (and they get a premium on those too), J is their profit maker

Are they high?

they are hitting 80% overall and given they price on average 10-20% higher than QF on SYD-HKG in Y I thought it was a fair assumption they are not struggling on this route

Where are you getting your data from, because its not right.

Considering they price SYD - HKG return in J at $5900 at the cheapest and usually mid 6k, I really am at a loss how they price their European destinations in J at or near the 7k mark. But I'm certainly not complaining as I have quite a few Europe trips in the diary for this year.

Actual stats breaking down in/out:

Same stats indicate a decline in passengers in by 12% for CX for April year on year.

Was looking at the Interim Report 2012 on CX.com which is admittedly a global number - a declining trend would not necessarily mean they are doing badly as stated they make their money in J and simply use Y to break even.

The fact they have kept their 4th flight on with a decline in pax numbers may also point to strong cargo business.
