Over the Dec-Jan period I am flying CX MEL-HKG-LHR (in L) and then FCO-HKG-MEL (in K). This apparently, according to the CX booking file I looked up, earn me 20,961 Asia Miles.

However, I have put my QFF on the booking as I fly QF most of the time (first CX flight, actually). How many status credits will this earn me on QF? My annual cycle resets in April so if I'm close I'd try and take a few domestic flights to get up to QFF Silver if possible.

Also what is the lounge access like in Rome?

You will earn QFF points at 0.5 per mile flown - info available at Qantas website here.

You will fly ~20983 (as you have determined through CX) miles (there can be a little variation between various measuring tools)

You will earn 135 QF SCs for this, at the discount economy earning rate - info for this and the no. of miles flown available at Mileage Monkey here (note Mileage Monkey is having a little trouble finding a permanent home at the moment and may move)

Status Credit earning mileage table information also available at Qantas website here

Can't help with the lounge access question.

Thank you very much!

I was surprised to see that discount economy MEL-HKG only gets 60 SCs return, and there is no difference for SYD-HKG either. With only $40 difference between QF and CX, I think I'll buy QF tickets to get 60 instead of 30 (planning another trip in 2011).

There are 4 lounges in Rome, but only one is operated by an actual member airline, that being the BA Executive Club lounge, open daily from 0615 to 1900.

The other 3 lounges are operated by different third parties for Iberia, Finnair, Japan Airlines, Malév, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Royal Jordanian, so I’m not sure you’d be given access unless flying on that airline, so perhaps the CX lounge you’d get into.

You can search and find lounges here.

We went into a CX lounge in the Rome airport - it was AWFUL.. dark, unappealing, some sandwiches & biscuits. We had a quick drink and left.... very disappointing. That was in July 2010

I might see if FCO offers anything to Amex Platinum or, of course, the Priority Pass.

Does anyone know if there are any QF/CX codeshares to HKG from Australia? I want a QF flight number but CX metal so I get the full status credits, not a pathetic 50%.

You will get the same number of status credits it is the points that may vary.

Does anyone have an opinion on the merits of flying on the CX A330 v. the QF 747-400 on this route?

Also I have been looking at return flights HKG-MEL, the good deals seem to be for the 1010 flight but not sure I'm keen on flying out early morning seeing as I'm working the day before. The 1915 (CX135) is the most expensive flight, but I noticed that the CX105 departing at 2340 actually flies HKG-ADL-MEL on CX metal. What's the difference in terms of SCs compared to flying direct? Is it just 10 SCs as per a domestic QF ADL-MEL run or is it more?

I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s counted as an indirect routing. Much like the flights via CNS don’t offer extra SC.

BNE-HKG and BNE-CNS-HKG are both 30/60/120 SC.
