Exactly what I said. there is no extraordinary weather yet. The BOM does give the caution with their Thursday and Friday forecasts that they depend on whether the track changes. Listening to the ABC gives you less of the forecast changes than the Bom app.

Having previously lived in Darwin I’m trying to work out what all the fuss is about. I have neighbours taping up their windows.

All these computer predictions seem to forget about butterflies. While media is getting somewhat excited, now even suggesting 2-3 days without power, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. We are scheduled for three days on GC next week so who knows what the butterflies will do by then, but expect one will be able to cancel and rebook if weather intolerable.

Well, that's News Corpse trying to sell newspapers and subscription. The ABC only chases ratings.

Meanwhile the Premier remains focused on his main constituency, the fossil fuel industry. He can't make this seem too unusual in case someone mentions climate change.

A cyclone may have impacted directly on South East Queensland, before, but there's a whole lot more clearing, development and people now than then. I do hope, for Queenslanders' sakes, that his downplaying doesn't cause any harm.

Had a flight for Thursday MEL - BNE which I tried to change on Sunday, but was told $99 pretty person change fee.

We were still undecided so didn't go ahead with it. After the press conference yesterday, made the choice to move it flight forward so called Qantas up again. This time the rep mentioned the $99 fee, but then I mentioned how we were going back to BNE to be and take care of elderly parents for to incoming cyclone, and if they could scrap the $99 change fee, which after a moment on hold they did.

Must of got the updated information while on the call so happy we now fly Wednesday morning instead of late Thursday.

I’ve been saying to my family in BNE that power outage for a couple days is probably the most likely outcome. BNE cops plenty of severe thunderstorms that are probably worse than this cyclone will be, but they pass through very quickly.

If it remains a higher Category 2 when it nears the coast, it is the prolonged winds and peaks of gales that will put their power infrastructure to the test.

So I tend to agree with the advice for preparing for power outages for up to three days; two at least.

But lower cat 2 and especially cat 1 is just a bit of an extra strong breeze, and lots of rain. Remain cautious but not alarmed.

If you’re south of the eye, you tend to cop more of the impact due to the rotation of the winds (as is seen in the bom maps with the intense red line below the eye).

And the calm before the storm is another thing for cyclones: birds and animals tend to clear out a day or so before, so it becomes quite calm around the place (IME anyway).

Thought I should get back to Brisbane, booked a flight just now, gee syd-bne flights are cheap for last minute! No-one wants to go to Brisbane! Funny that.

We're off to Adelaide Saturday morning to get our Fringe on. Fingers crossed things have calmed a little by then.

It's a new and odd experience looking down onto the Brisbane River and wondering what is in store for the region over the next few days.

New update an hour ago and forecast predicting landfall has moved a little more south than the previous update.


As I have cancelled our NZ trip my prediction is that it will continue to move further south and BNE will be open on Friday.

In the BOM app, go to Warnings tab (lower right of main screen) -> Queensland -> Tropical cyclone forecast track map - Alfred. Scroll down to see updated map, then further along will be the Intensity category times.

As expected after it crosses the coast. It has to be a much higher category to maintain that inland.

At present Alfred is now too far off the coast to show up on the radar.
