I'm currently having to change dates on a number of segments on a DONE5 and I'm getting a little stuck - it seems that I'm coming across some problems. Using Expertflyer, I'm seeing two flights through HKG that have lots of D class availability, but when I try to connect them, the D class availability dries up:

This is NRT-HKG-AKL on 12th December 2012:

NRT-HKG on CX509, at least 9 D seats available:

HKG-AKL on CX117, at least 7 D seats available:

But when you do NRT-HKG-AKL on CX509/CX117, suddenly the D availability dries up:

I've tried various things - there is a JL7041 (CX509 codeshare), but when this is selected, the D class availability on CX117 dries up.

Is this normal behaviour? Is there a rule that I might be running afoul of that I don't know about?

It's tricky because there's limited HKG-AKL availability on the 13th and 14th as well, and I was hoping to get back by the 12th. At a push I could do the flight on the 15th December, but that would get me back to Sydney late (pushing up against the AFF dinner on the 22nd in MEL!).

It does not run afoul of the MCT at HKG that I can see.

Any tips, tricks or advice would be gratefullly received. I can't work it out.

I'm sorry about the graphics being too small - I can't seem to make them bigger, even by clicking on them and making them full size in the image properties in the forum post!

This could be obvious (and you may have tried it) but is there a reason you can't book the flights in as two seperate segements?
i.e. flight X: CX501 then flight Y: CX107. Will potentially solve the lack of D for a "straight through" flight

If the system does not allow you to book them as two seperate tickets in the first instance, then maybe you can dummy book CX501 for 12 Dec and maybe CX107 for 14 Dec in , then call up and get CX107 changed back to 12 Dec?

I would call your travel agent to Make these changes. I have found expertflyer to show no availability for cx where ta can get seats.

CX is returning to E/F the availability for NRT-AKL, not NRT-HKG and HKG-AKL.

If you book a stopover at HKG (> 24h) it should fix the issue. Of course, that may not be possible with your plans.
