Hi all,

I've never used QFF points for an international upgrade so this is all a bit new to me.

I'm a WP(PG) flying discount economy SYD-LAX on QF11 (A380) this Sunday. I requested an upgrade to Business about 10 days ago. At that time, there were 22 free business class seats and 19 QF staff awaiting a staff-discounted seat (but not necessarily all in J...)

Yesterday Seatcounter was showing D9, but today it's showing D0.

Being 4 days out, is it possible that QF have provisionally allocated points upgrades already, and therefore one of those D seats might be mine? Or is it more likely that they were all sold (e.g. via DONE4's) and hence my upgrade chances are slim?

Seatcoutner is still showing J9.

(I'm aware of the order for upgrades - CL, Plat, Gold etc... and first in best dressed).

Thanks all!
- Febs.

You'll be fine - I have received upgrades to J for 2 pax when it has showed D0C0J9 (on the trans pacific route).

Please let us know how you go. have you ticked the upgrade to prem eco if unsuccessful to J?

Also, how do you know that there were only 22 seats free in J?

- and that 19 QF staffers for waitlisted on that flight?

PS: I'm trying to upgrade a non-status family member on a flight to Tokyo this weekend and it's showing J3 - I have warned him to expect to be in Economy!

J9 C9 is your friend with this ... SWMBO and I were upgraded last year on QF107 SYD-JFK when it was showing J4 C0 D0 in the days before.

Remember, there are those in J endeavouring to travel F as well ...

Thanks guys.

Nope. I thought about it, but decided I'd slum it in Y if need be. For 18,000pts I would have done it, but not for 45,000pts.

A friend works at QF and has access to some of the systems that show waitlisted QF staff, exact remaining seats etc...

Remember, there are those in J endeavouring to travel F as well ...

That was the original plan...but you know how these policy changes are!

That would be me for my flight from HKG to SYD next Friday.

Seatcounter shows A5F5RedRedRedRed.....
Checkmytrip though shows at least 6 empty seats in J on lower deck.

Busy times!:-|

Unfortunately having a TC that doesn't pay for the tickets until less than a week before departure means I'm at the back of the queue.:(

Who gets priority on the upgrade into J :

(1) A QF staffer waitlisted in J on staff travel; or

(2) A paid passenger in economy who has requested a points upgrade into J?

Paid passenger upgrade waitlists are processed around 24 hours before the flight. So they happen first. Staff travel as "standby" or "space available", which is not evaluated until after the uprade waitlist has been processed.

However, its quite possible that there will still remain empty/unsold business class seats after the upgrade waitlist has been processed even if upgrades have been denied. Qantas often holds back some business class seats just in case they are needed for last minute sales or to carry displaces passengers if another flight is delayed or cancelled. Such remaining seats would then be able to be allocated to standby passengers (staff travelling on a space available basis) if they remain unsold or unneeded for other purposes when check-in closes.

The suspense builds - please tell us how you go!

My bronze upgradee doesn't stand much of a chance on Sunday to NRT J4.

How is your request going? (My poor upgradee to Tokyo tomorrow is facing J1 so no chance!)

Seatcounter is showing C9/D9/J9...looking good!

They say they don't confirm upgrades until 5hrs beforehand, which is around 10am tomorrow...so I'll know by check-in. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

No, wait a minute. There's a booking that says "Note: An upgrade to Economy is requested. Status of upgrade will be shown 5 hours before departure."

Then another one that says "Note: Your upgrade from Sydney to Los Angeles has been declined. "

Confused...

Edit: Qantas lady says it's a website bug, and the upgrades haven't been processed yet.

View your reservation through www.checkmytrip.com

This shows in real time what the reservation is doing.

The qantas website shows the booking in a cluttered and confusing way.

You could see confirmation in checkmytrip.com as early as 18 hours before takeoff!

I know its crazy but the above seems to be a normal part of the upgrade request processing starting to happen. In my experience if you see the above about 12-18 hours before your flight this is a good indication the upgrade will come through. As others have suggested if you look at checkmytrip.com when QF shows the above you will often see that the new booking class is showing as confirmed although seats will probably not show as being allocated as yet.

Next step is usually points going and then the confirmation on the QF website that its come through.

Cheers

Yes, yes and Yes. Upgrade from J to F came though for the HKG - SYD leg tonight.:D Happened exactly as you said.

I was prettly confident given seatcounter showed A5 F5 last night. I also noticed the other classes were pretty volatile.
