Given that Hobart is only an hours drive from where I live, this may only just scrape in as a 'Trip Report' (especially in the AFF sense :) ) but I thought people may enjoy seeing and hearing about the best food/wine/arts gig in Australia. You can add 'right now' to that if you like, but I'm happy with it as written.

Dark mof_.

Hopefully most people would have heard about the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart by now. The private creation of gambling millionaire David Walsh, its allowed Hobart to throw off some of its inhibitions and a bit of its conservative reputation. Walsh also started 'Dark mof_' - a festival for the winter solstice, celebrating the cold of winter south of the 42nd parallel and it too is turning into a screaming success.

Its centred around the Hobart waterfront, and it turns a pretty coughpy old railway/industrial corner of it into 'Dark Park' for a week. Friends and I walked past the building (a freezer storehouse) housing the 'Bass Bath' - described as "Prepare to receive the sacrament of sound. Enter the circle of doom, drone and eight 2100 horsepower monolithic subwoofers."    Judging by the way the whole building was vibrating on the outside, I believe to be exposed to it inside would damage internal organs. Its that sort of cultural festival!

This is sort of a visual representation of Dark mof_:

Get the idea?

Do your self a favour and start planning a trip to HBA this time next year. A review of mof_ from SMH here.

That said, most of the cultural thing is a bit too way out for my liking, so this TR is focussing on what I really like - food and drink!! Namely the Dark mof_ Winter Feast: It ran for 5 nights this year, up from 2 last year.

On the left, that was the outside sign; inside the gates you are met with this artistic pile of firewood. 'Fire' sets the scene  and what isn't burning is lit red. We arrived at about 4:30pm (its dark by 5:30pm this time of year) and a few people were already settling in by one of the dozens of fire pits and drums of gas fires. On the right is the roast chook 'kitchen' burning down its coals .

DMF3.jpg

Later outside, many people eating at the roasting kitchens .. all sorts of food and wine, and live entertainment.

DMF5.jpg

There was plenty happening outside, but inside is where its mainly at. The same venue as the 'Taste of Tasmania' - a renovated wharf shed. Seating at this event for about 600, but constantly changing as people come and go.

Love it RooFlyer! I visited MONA last year and really enjoyed the unusual art, more interesting then most traditional museums I've been to all over the world and the local Moo Brew is one of the best beers I tried in Australia so far.
Dark mof_ looks like a perfect excuse to visit Hobart again next year :)

The food and most of the wine on offer are from small to micro producers ... many of them I had never heard of. Moorilla winery and Moo Brew prominent, not surprisingly.

So lets go first to a great find. The winery? "Sailor Seeks Horse" Click the link and figure it out. From the Huon Valley, south of Hobart.

I was a bit dubious about the quality given the 'novelty' name, but it was pretty darn good! Go on, support a couple just starting out - order half a dozen or so ... and also impress your friends with your acuity in sniffing out this boutique wine :)

The food was simply fantastic. Dozens of places to choose from and not that expensive at $8 for most serves, more for the fancier and larger dishes. Nearly all from local organic meat, dairy, honey, fruit etc producers. Some of the menus below. The guy on the left you may recognise from his TV shows Gourmet Farmer. Matthew Evans his Fat Pig Farm are on Bruny Island.

Qantas or any airline could serve the Fat Pig Bun in First Class and there would be a stampede to buy tickets. :p :D

More later. Something stronger than wine needed to ward off the cold? Tasmanian whiskey is winning world awards (Lark Distillery for instance).

DMF7.jpg

But I like my G&Ts and familiarised myself with 40 Spotted Rare Tasmanian Gin (left) and McHenry Sloe Gin. The cup on the left has warm red wine with gin infusion. Yum!

Went to Uni in Hobart -- would have been great to have such events back then. (Not that I'd have been able to afford much). Nice to see Tassie leading the way. Will aim for a trip in coming years.

Just heard on the radio that the annual Winter Solstice nude swim has taken part. 750 participating, water temperature 11 degrees, air temperature 1 (that's one) degree.

Back to where it was altogether more comfortable.

Oyster shooters .. but like the swimmers I prefer au natural (but only in oysters I hasten to add  )

Some more of the menus:

Back outside, and this was one of the more popular food stalls ... its crayfish season!

DMF12.jpg

BBQed octopus tentacles and it was great to see the old 'half-a 44 gallon drum' make a return:

And the occasional blast of extra warmth.

Nude swim prelude ... from the Mercury. But note that even without the towels, they are not nude!

A few more pics of the outside environment of the Winter feast. Byt the way, its $10 or $20 admission, depending on the night (opening hours) and they sell 10,000 tix per night; 2/3 sold at the venue on the day. It worked very well.

Something a bit novel (for me). bread dough prepared and swirled on a stick; the punters bake it over an open fire.

DMF17.jpg

More firey stuff; Parliament House over the road lit up (cause was Elder Abuse).
DMF18.jpg

We walked along the waterfront to see some other mof_ installations; past the massive column of light I've posted about elsewhere. Punters hang onto a handle and the light pulses with their heartbeat. A bit disconcerting when it stops! Hotel Grand Chancellor to the right gets into the red spirit.

DMF19.jpg

Along the way we came across a bunch of light based installations. This one seemed particularly pointless. Trees in tubs lit purple and a bower with fires in drums. (I think.) But on the right is the 'Fire Organ'. Great balls of fire!

That's how I was taught to cook damper when I was a young tacker

Very interesting, RF. I've been to Vivid in SYD twice, and that's pretty amazing. Dark mof_ looks equally so.

Is this year the first one? I presume it's planned to be an annual event near the winter solstice?

That time next year is free for me at this stage; I might have to look at going over.

It's at least year 3. Going from strength to strength. Was on David Walsh's exclusive dime, now with State govt support, which I like .

I should add that Walsh still pays for most of it and it still loses money.

Hopefully not for much longer.

Hobart economy huge winner.

Yes and so good to see. All power to David Walsh. What did Gina ever do for anyone?

Lastly, a few more views of the Fire Organ. This was frankly disappointing. It was described as an organ performance with synchronised eruptions of fire, (I was thinking 'Close Encounters') but in effect it was an amusical low pitched droning with seemingly random very noisy (high pitched) eruptions of burning gas.

So, thoroughly fed and watered, we went back to my friends' place to stay the night and woke up to a snow-capped Mt Wellington soon after dawn (unfortunately iPhone not up to very sharp photo).
