Given that Hobart is only an hours drive from where I live, this may only just scrape in as a 'Trip Report' (especially in the AFF sense ) but I thought people may enjoy seeing and hearing about the best food/wine/arts gig in Australia. You can add 'right now' to that if you like, but I'm happy with it as written.
Dark mof_.
Hopefully most people would have heard about the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart by now. The private creation of gambling millionaire David Walsh, its allowed Hobart to throw off some of its inhibitions and a bit of its conservative reputation. Walsh also started 'Dark mof_' - a festival for the winter solstice, celebrating the cold of winter south of the 42nd parallel and it too is turning into a screaming success.
Its centred around the Hobart waterfront, and it turns a pretty coughpy old railway/industrial corner of it into 'Dark Park' for a week. Friends and I walked past the building (a freezer storehouse) housing the 'Bass Bath' - described as "Prepare to receive the sacrament of sound. Enter the circle of doom, drone and eight 2100 horsepower monolithic subwoofers."    Judging by the way the whole building was vibrating on the outside, I believe to be exposed to it inside would damage internal organs. Its that sort of cultural festival!
This is sort of a visual representation of Dark mof_:
Get the idea?
Do your self a favour and start planning a trip to HBA this time next year. A review of mof_ from SMH here.
That said, most of the cultural thing is a bit too way out for my liking, so this TR is focussing on what I really like - food and drink!! Namely the Dark mof_ Winter Feast: It ran for 5 nights this year, up from 2 last year.
On the left, that was the outside sign; inside the gates you are met with this artistic pile of firewood. 'Fire' sets the scene and what isn't burning is lit red. We arrived at about 4:30pm (its dark by 5:30pm this time of year) and a few people were already settling in by one of the dozens of fire pits and drums of gas fires. On the right is the roast chook 'kitchen' burning down its coals .
Later outside, many people eating at the roasting kitchens .. all sorts of food and wine, and live entertainment.
There was plenty happening outside, but inside is where its mainly at. The same venue as the 'Taste of Tasmania' - a renovated wharf shed. Seating at this event for about 600, but constantly changing as people come and go.
