My 20 yr old daughter flew Perth London via Singapore yesterday.

When checking in in Perth they were unable to issue her boarding card from Singapore to London and check in staff asked that she go to the transfer desk in Singapore to retrieve it.

Once at the Singapore desk she was informed that economy was full and she may have to wait for the next flight. After a brief few moments with the manager the presented her with an upgrade to 1st class..

What a result:lol: and an amazing travel experience, she has only recently purchased aQantas Frequent Flyer Card

Hi Wilhelm, and welcome to AFF!

Great travel experience for your daughter, although now she may expect this every time! :(

Hi Wilhelm, Wow that's great for your daughter ....!! Economy is going to be a real drag now..

WTF? No offence but never had an op up from QF here and a basically first time flier gets a 2 or 3 step free upgrade???

My girlfriend had a similar experience two years back, flying from London to Singapore. She is not a frequent flyer (as in not even a member of a program) but there was a problem with her booking which was one of her first ever long haul flights. Long story short she was upgraded to business class rather than having to wait for the next flight.

Mayber you aren't pretty enough for QF Simon?

A little OT but many years ago as a poor student backpacker, myself and similarly poor travelling companion were upgraded from coach to business on a UA flight back home to the UK from JFK. We arrived very late, almost missed check in and flight overbooked.
Never happened to me after that on any airline until QF upgraded us x 6 Y to J AKL-SYD last month.
I expect my next op-up will be when I'm retired at this rate ;)

Congratulations to your daughter, Wilhelm. A triple upgrade with no status....that is like winning lotto. As you can see, some pax haven't had the upgrade gods smile on them yet (simongr :() Welcome to AFF

I am most certainly "no oil painting"..

Yet my only op-up ever was J-F on CX (as a QFF NB - my status is *A)..

The significant factor.. which appears to apply in the OP's daughters case as well.. was that I was travelling ALONE!

Given the existence of EDR is it odd that someone would still need to purchase a Qantas Frequent Flyer membership?

Maybe that's classed as a 'paid upgrade' these days ;)

I've heard many stories of first-time NB's being upgraded at check-in, but never 3 classes to F from Y (Friends seemed to get it on PER-SYD flights the first or second flight they took as a NB back in the 90's).

I have been upped on BA J to F (after mrssimongr got sick LCA-LHR and we couldnt board our flight LHR-HKG - the next day the FA in F took very good care of poopsie [aka mrssimongr] - it was possibly one of the best flights I have experienced) - I have just never had an upgrade on QF.

In terms of travelling alone in my 200+ flights since May 2006 (when I started to fly a bit more) only about 12 of those flights have I been travelling with someone else - although I will admit that in about 90% of flights internationally I have been in the highest cabin... But not domestically.

Welcome to AFF Wilhelm!

That story is enough to make many on AFF envious of your daughter who does not even have status with QF. ;)

Whilst I am pleased for your daughter, Qantas should have it's head read.

Why on earth would they give a new FFers with no travel history a Y --> F upgrade - that's insane - even at the last minute, there had to have been a higher staus traveller in J, Y+ or Y that could have been upgraded (I can understand if at the last minute it's Y --> F to save multiple re-issues ie., not having to do y--> Y+ and y+ -> J and J--> F at the last minute).

They may have earnt your daughter's business for a long time, but potentially lose many others (likely of higher long term value) who find out about this.

Smashing story. The return Y flight is now going to be a drag!

On BA BKK to SYD on Saturday the crew took about 7 or 8 pax from the very back and took them to the pointy end... Maybe fellow crew members? Not sure...

The only times I have been upgraded was when I had no or low status. Maybe the airlines think that we are bound to them anyways so we don't need an upgrade as we will be flying them again.
