Got this today:

We noticed that you are travelling soon and wanted to let you know that we're making it easier to use your Qantas Points to register for a Flight Upgrade Award.* For a limited time, you can request an upgrade on sale fares which are normally restricted. This offer is available for travel from 1 December 2013 until 31 January 2014.

My flight MEL-SIN is indeed upgradable but for 50,000 points. It was 40,000 last time.

Isnt it 60,000 for a straight award? Hardly worth it.

I got the same offer.

My Sale Ticket was originally non-upgradeable but it is now - with this offer.

One way to look at this offer is this: with an upgradeable ticket, it costs 40,000 pts to go from Y to J whereas with this offer, a Sale ticket will cost 50,000 pts i.e. an extra 10,000 pts to make up for a ticket difference of some $300.

Fair deal: 3c per points ???

I got the same email in the last hour. Same as you SYD-SIN for 50,000 instead of 40,000.

Yet the Upgrade with Points Calculator https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/upgradeCalculator says 40,000 discount economy to business.

Correct. MEL-SIN is zone 5 so a Classic J award is 60,000. And the usual discount Y to J upgrade is 40,000. So this 50,000 to upgrade is strange!

From what I have read from TRs the J A330 product is not worth it.


Perhaps they've seen a spike in Y bookings thanks to .br and they're having trouble filling the J cabins?

Not so strange when you factor in the recent domestic 25% increase to upgrades, I am guessing they have inadvertently made the change to affect international ones as well.

Dont quite have enough QFF points anyway....

Taxes and surcharges of about $250. So I have paid ~$350-$400 for the flight ex-SIN.

Wouldnt in that case a discount be in order to full J Cabin? I don't understand the reason for the spike in required points.

That target was achieved a few months ago.

Maybe the comment was only in relation to points over the magic million.

Well I have a flight from LAX-MEL next week booked on a sale fare and wasn't lucky enough to be offered the upgrade this time. I am wondering if anyone has had success calling begging for them to consider it. I'm quite happy to use the points, it's not like I want it for free and if the flight is lightly loaded surely it should be a no brainier but I've been told the phone agents don't have the power. Does anyone have any experience? It's just my schedule has changed and I now have a series of very important meetings straight after arriving and really need to be fresh...

Yes, I got upgraded from deep Y on request to PE two days ago (25,000 points). Got an SMS* three days earlier.

My return leg is not successful yet (14 hrs to go).

I'm WP.

Re. the earlier post about 'calling QF' to request an upgrade, I would like to hear of someone's experience.

I would have thought the premium line cannot do that. Happy to be proven wrong, of course.

The S is pronounced as es - so the vowel sound is the reason.

In terms of calling QF - I doubt it will work, but could always try..
