This invitation just landed in my inbox:-

Now through December 15[SUP]th[/SUP],we would like to give you 5,000 bonus miles when you become a member of ourworld–class SkyMiles program and an additional 5,000 bonus miles when you takeyour next flight.

That's 10,000 miles that don't expire and can be redeemed at any time.

And as an additional perk, we will match the status you've earned onanother airline. For a status match, first enroll in the SkyMiles program, thensimply provide your elite status credentials from another airline.

SkyMiles Medallion® status offers premium benefits such as Rollover MedallionQualification Miles, Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades for paid tickets, waivedbaggage fees, and more.

We look forward to seeing you onboard as a SkyMiles member.

I may be back to the US next year, and my last 2 Delta flights, I credited to Velocity, so is there any point to joining this and taking the status match (currently gold with V).

If they match VA status then that will give you Skyteam Gold which you may then be able to find a *A airline that will match your Skyteam giving you *A Gold.

Well that could come in handy then. I'm going to try for *A trip next year using USDM. Hmmm......

You won't need it if you are flying USDM J because you will receive all the benefits of Gold Status by flying J.

It will only be handy for Y trips on non-VA aligned *A partners (i.e. not NZ or SQ)

Ah yes J, of course!

Don't forget the free bag benefit!!! I am VA Plat and last month I flew 4 domestic USA sectors with Delta within a 2 week period and they charged (or wanted to charge) me for the bag every time. Thankfully I was able to carry my bag on so I avoided the $25 fee. I would take the status match offer for sure. The Delta check-in staff assured me that "we're friends with VA, but not close friends - our close friends are the Skyteam partners". She then said "will the $25 bag charge be cash or card (with a big American smile). Getting into the Delta lounge is always an adventure too. When you hand over your card it is like you can see them thinking ..who the hell is Velocity....eventually they find us
