Dennis Bunnik's behind-the-scenes tour of Doha Airport

From time to time some of Bunnik's tours look good but the big turn off is he only sells ex Aus including airfares - they do not let you book tour/land only, so it is impossible to do your own thing before or after or use reward seats to travel.

If you've ever wondered what happens to all the dirty blankets and dishes after a long-haul flight lands, Dennis Bunnik's latest video series going behind the scenes at DOH is quite interesting.
Very good video. Still interesting how many manual steps there are, like wrapping the economy class cutlery (100,000 per day!). The fact that they do this, shows the availability of relatively low-cost imported labour in the Middle East.

In SA anyway, this work is done in Bedford Industries which is an organisation that finds employment for people with disabilities, mainly intellectual, who are unable to do more demanding work. I don't know pay rates etc etc.

It’s at the very least 12.5% of minimum wage

i work in the Sector and if these Disability Supported Employment Factories were not around then none of the Workers would work anywhere. Go and check out a provider that has these industries and see how happy the Guys are that work here, it most certainly not because of Money. They also get to keep their DSP And ask Qantas why they refuse to pay more for the service they use.

Qantas refuse to pay more
I would suggest it’s similar to utilising labour rates in Thailand And Vietnam to pay JQ staff in Asia.

Or for that matter UK based staff on the Kangaroo route. There’s that notable case QF Lost when they were required to pay Australian pay rates on Australian domestic legs of international flights

PS I’m surprised there aren’t more 15yo employed as they only need paid 40% of minimum wage

And not an excuse for clients of these supported employment factories to not pay a reasonable rate.
Sadly if they were paid miminim wage then their services would no longer be used. They'd also lose their pension. And the benefits in having that pension is way more than just money. They also want to work..

But they were certainly very happy when we visited them and just pleased to be able to contribute to a meaningful life.

I know. But 12.5% of minimum wage? When are blue collar worker pay reduced due to productivity?. I can think of apprentices, and juniors but they are paid a lot more as a %.
I'm also not so sure about the refrain "its not about the money" either. I'm highly suspicious of comments like this. (The reference point here is the unpaid interships - its not about the money but about opportunity to be work get experience with a great organisation like xx_x)
Similarly, there is the notion of volunteerism. A for profit company should never rely on volunteers IMO.

But I don't know enough to have an informed view about what should be a reasonable wage. But it seems like 12.5% is very low.

With the addition of the pension entitlements it is highly likely their benefits are far in excess of any minimum wage. I agree it is problematic. Paying them minimum wage would likely remove their pension entitlements. So they'd be worse off. Or out of a job because I doubt their productivity wouldn't be up to scratch. And with that comes risk of losing their job.

My sister works at Bedford in Adelaide due to a disability, and lives at a Bedford owned housing estate at Brighton
If she’s earn more, @Pushka is correct, she would lose her pension, her subsidised living, her subsidised medical costs and access to other programs. They don’t go to work for the money, it’s part of their social interaction and feeling like they are contributing to the world. If she didn’t have Bedford, she would be at home all day everyday and lonely.

That is great to hear first hand experience. Your sister has the best attitude on life.

that's actually mind-boggling

what's done to orchestrate the whole between flights logistics with a HARD Deadline is phenomenal

Yeah, I was very surprised by the turnaround time between all those trolleys with dirty dishes coming off the flight from SEA and then being cleaned and reloaded onto the flight to MUC. It was around 8 hours between those flights!
