Just on board QF512 to BNE from
SYD in 4A. I am just trying to work out if this is "pollie"* edition with 6 rows of J but rows 4 - 6 selling as whY.

Does this explain why 4B wasn't available for selection yesterday? I had assumed that it was a CL shadow...

* note autocorrect tries to convert pollie to pollute...

Bang goes part of that theory as 5ABC are all occupied including mother with infant behind me...

The arm rests are indented on rows 4 & 5 if configured as a J setup, otherwise there is no difference.

I believe the 'usual' and 'optimal' configuration for the B734s is 12J/132Y which means only 4 cabin crews are required for the 144 passengers (36 pax per crew X 4). If the flight is not too full, the middle seats in rows 4 and 5 are usually blocked as these seats only have a half sized tray table and seat pocket.

With the middle seats blocked and the extra legroom, I would take the seats in rows 4 and 5 because it is like travelling in J but minus the food/drinks and the slightly reduced seat width (I can even use the single toilet up front ;)).

Am not aware that QF still practices 'flexible' seating in the 734s, so Row 4 and Row 5 should be permanently Y.
That said it just takes a no middle seat flight (likely given Plat shadow at the front), and someone who know which lever to press, and bingo a wider seat!

The 734s that operate to CBR are almost invariably 20J (ie: rows 1-5) IME. I can't speak for other routes.

Having flown on SYD-CBR quite a bit, the only times I can recall where this hasn't been the case has been where a 738 has been scheduled and there's been a last minute swap to a 734 - in this case, rows 4-5 usually remain Y.

So there are 734s that have 20J and some that have 12J?
Only ever been on the 12J ones....

Yep mini tray table in row 4. Nicer than the "normal" row 4 as now curtain in your face so much lighter in the cabin.

They all have between 12 and 20, it just depends on how they set up the seats.

All QF 734's have the same seating with the first five rows convertible betwixt 2x2 and 3x3.

Other than CBR routes they are generally configured with the first 3 rows 2x2 and rows 4 & 5 as 3x3. The first six rows have a few inches additional pitch to accommodate "business" leg room.

Methinks Simon scored and empty 4b.

It's for this reason I do like economy on the 734's as there are normally 6 forward aisle seats with additional leg room (4/5/6-C/D), rather than the 73H's with only 2 (4-C/D).

I think it was a fairly lighted loaded 4E, 5E and A few others were also empty. I did hear the crew say that they had just come in from CBR that morning...

I once scored an Op Up to J (due the flight being oversold in Y) on a B734 which was configured with 5 rows of business. Seemed a strange approach when they could have easily? reconfigured 1 or more rows back to Y and kept me (and presumably others) there rather than offering the upgrade. Not that I was complaining though....

I was on a flight (ADL-MEL I think) a couple month or so ago that was a last minute sub from the CBR route, and rows 4/5 were still configured as J. Rather awkward as all the people in B/E seats in those rows had to hang around in the aisle until an engineer could be found to reset the seats :)
