Different Classes

Sorry if I seem naive, but I am young and new to this.

Could somebody please explain the different seat allocation classes on flights to me? I have booked flights with Qantas with seat allocations of (N) and (V) and was wondering what they meant.

What other classes are there, and what does it all mean?

Very good question - for those not "in the know" the various codes and letters can be baffling to say the least. "N" and "V" have nothing to do with seat allocation, they relate to the fare you paid, and the conditions associated with that fare. for eg, on Qantas domestically "N" would be the cheapest available to the general public - ie a web special that can only be changed to a higher fare, and only prior to day of travel for $33.50 + the fare difference, etc etc. "V" would be a higher fare than "N". The fares on Qantas, domestically, are generally (lowest to highest, least to most flexible) N Q O V S L O M K H B Y (in economy) & D J (in business class). The fares K and above offer the most flexibility, anything below that must be changed prior to day of departure.

It's just a way for them to limit the number of seats sold at a certain fare on each flight. So on a 73Y (all Y 737-376) with 136 seats, all seats could be sold at the full Y fare, but maybe only 4 seats at the red e-deal fare (N class), 6 seats at the red deal fare (O class) and so on.
