Hi All,

Well I'm still on track for SG before end of yr when my roll-over happens. And the sickness is setting in ... earning SCs and points.

Need to go to FRA from Syd for work.
For about the same money I can go 'direct' SYD to FRA (stopover in SG) on QF5 or do a multi-city:
SYD > MEL on QF439 ... Then
MEL > SG on QF9 ... then
SG > FRA on QF5

For the multi-city, I change plans & flight numbers each time.
So would I pick up the applicable SCs e.g SYD > MEL = 10SCs ??

It will be in Y (discount economy).
I don't care about the plane type.
I want to maximise SCs.

So direct or keep trying to change flight numbers as many times as possible (on a single booking) ??

P.S It seems I can also go via Pert, Bris or Adelaide from Sydney. Then they all go to SG then on to FRA. Each time we have a flight number change as well.

Breaking up your trip, and changing flight numbers, will help you maximise SC quite nicely.

SYD-FRA would give you 60SC’s in discount economy.

SYD-MEL-SIN-FRA would give you 10 + 30 + 40 = 80SC’s in discount economy.

So breaking things up is much more favourable.

FYI:

SYD-ADL-SIN-FRA would give you 15 + 25 + 40 = 80SC’s in discount economy.

SYD-PER-SIN-FRA would give you 20 + 25 + 40 = 85SC’s in discount economy.

You'll have to end up on QF5 regardless which will leave SIN late night from memory.

If you want the most status credits then you would want to fly via MEL or PER. ADL is not a daily service, MEL is probably the easiest with a short domestic hop and can potentially ride the A380 up with minimal transit time in SIN. Otherwise, PER will get you slight more SC but the misery of a transcon plus poorer timing. QF71 & 77 run on A330s but you would have to take a morning flight to PER and bare the terminal transfer. Others with actual experience will be able to reinforce the inconvenience of it. All up not worth the extra 5 SC.

Transiting in MEL is smooth, I'd be going with if you want the most out of it.

SYD-PER-SIN-FRA would give you 20 + 25 + 40 = 85SC’s in discount economy.

I like it a lot. So much so, I'll return via same.
170 SCs better than a poke in the eye with a plastic knife.

I've got time to kill, so the Perth side looks ok at this stage.
I know it's only an extra 10 SCs but I expect to come right down to the wire to make SG.

I'll put up with the painful times / transfers to hit the target and not have to burn my own cash.

Thanks

Does CX not fly to FRA?

Just throwing it in there;)

Actually most of OneWorld flies there... CX from HK, AA from DFW, MA from BUD, LA from SCL, JA from NRT, BA from London & even RJ goes there... you could fly RJ from HKG via AMM if you wanted :)

edit: ....apparently Iberia flies there from Zaragoza too

I would recommend this too, as it’s a great airport to transfer in. So easy.

I guess if you’re going to come down the wire then it makes sense for you, but it’s not that great a routing for an extra 10SC overall.

I’m not sure which route you’d suggest to get to HKG, as all that I can see would give the same or less SC’s.

Unless you’re suggesting SYD-PER-SIN-HKG-FRA that is 20 + 25 + 20 + 35 = 100SC.

And if that, then you could probably squeeze in a J run BKK-HKG-SIN and do something like:

SYD-MEL-BKK-HKG-SIN-FRA that is 10 + 30 + 60 + 80 + 40 = 220SC’s. :D

Just throwing ideas in, I am sure people on here have had crazier indirect routings:cool:

RJ fly BKK-HKG-AMM and AMM-FRA so you could increase it again. Or go RTW come back FRA-SCL-AKL-SYD on LAN...

Actually I've been looking at getting to FRA next year and considering trying the RJ option along with some CX runs. Getting back and forth to SIN or BKK on JQ *class. I swore RJ had some good J prices but seems to have jumped back up recently.

I'll put up with the painful times / transfers to hit the target and not have to burn my own cash.

Which makes much sense if it really is that tight. I'm entirely self-funded but each time I've tried some drastically indirect flying before and it can be fun if you know what to expect. Best of luck. Hope you've been saving the complimentary QP invite from becoming PS for SIN, would be a good time to use it.

Have you looked at the possibility of upgrading to Premium Economy, depending on when you are going this may be an option?

...and if you go SIN LHR FRA, you'd pick up another 10 SC's. That's the way I usually fly to Europe. Do the same rtn as well. Need to put up with LHR tho'

Scratches head ... ok every SC potentially helps ... except it just further fuels my growing sickness. I guess I'll get to really feel the full benefits of discount economy. But it's part of the fun I just keep telling myself.

Re Y+ ... too much coin at this stage from what I can see.

Ok well I'm now starting to expand my options list ... more than I had originally thought.

Oh and where possible, I'd like to avoid Ulaanbaatar as a routing city :p

QF have not yet released SYD-FRA Y+ fares, but they will in the next 4 weeks, you might be surprised.

Entirely for my own interest, when would availability be made for Y+? Isn't it designed to work along with the 744 retrofitting in 12 months time? Right now a J ticket pretty much assures us status pax of a old F seat in the pointy end if you allocate seating. Will Y+ be made available in the mean time giving us access to the J hard product?

I believe the Y+ for two class is not that far off to quote the Qantas source LOL:

"Seat maps have begun to appear for flights in Spring 2011 showing the two class 747-400 fleet with a Premium Economy cabin fitted. This was mooted in 2008 but the re-fits were cancelled at that time. Economy rows 26-37 are removed and replaced by two full rows of eight Premium Economy seats in the forward mini-cabin, four pairs of two seats on the left hand side alongside the stairs and galley and a further two full rows of eight seats behind."

Half the two class fleet have visited AVV this month, maybe for a refit or just to see if a refit makes sense?

Just be careful routing through LHR if you are only doing it for SC's as it can potentially add significant cost in the tax calculation of the itinerary even if the base fare doesn't change price.
