Browsing the Qantas website for a forthcoming SYD - SIN trip I got back a choice of $5052 for J on QF5 back QF32 or $5413 for F on QF31 back QF32. I fly up on 2/1/06 and back on 5/1/06. Why such little difference in price? Does F get discounted from time to time?

Yep, that's where the 'A' class bucket comes in for Dicount First (D for Discount Business).

I found the same thing a few weeks back. Having allowed $5,100 in my travel budget for a J fare, I splurged the (company's) money on the extra $300 and bought the first class ticket. The ticket is classified as "A". My travel dates are SYD-SIN 07/01 and SIN-SYD 18/01.

It appears that full F fare for this sector is approx $7,400. I don't know why the discount is available - perhaps a quiet time of year?

You have to love it, don't you guys...a couple of hundred bucks for extra cabin bonus, SC's and easier renewal....(without even going into the better service, F&B, etc)

Does this explain the 'cheap' fares that are advertised in the Herald each Saturday?

Indeed - my SC's zeroed out a few weeks back so the 150 SC's each way will help kick me off for the new year! :D

Peter are you travelling from PER or SYD to SIN.

SYD-SIN in business is 120 SC's and first is 180 SC's.

JohnK / stuandmel,

No, I'm flying SYD-SIN direct, and return. I thought I saw mention of 150 SC's on the QF website. :? If it's 180 then I am happier still. :D

So you should be...half way to Gold renewal so early in you membership year - and within budget for your travel expenditure claim.

I would be changing the return date to later in the year and coming back on one of the $2000 J class specials ex Singapore if I could. Now thats a comfort status run

Nesting an F SYD/SIN/SYD ticket with the J SIN/PER/SIN (even including a third ticket PER/SYD/PER as J or Y with upgrades), could make an interesting trip...

Kiwi Flyer could even nest an AKL/SYD/AKL with it (as I knew he was looking to try and use the SIN/PER/SIN deal)..

The Sydney and Melbourne J Specials were extended as well as the Perth one.

Is that $2,000 each way? Or return? I hadn't thought of this but given that I'll probably travel back to SIN in March it might be worth considering.

~ $2100 SGD for the return trip (inc taxes) from SIN - PER.

The price goes up considerably when flying to other Australian locations, for example SYD is about double that and so is BNE and MEL.

It is still much cheaper than flying J the other way though!!

BTW, $2100 SGD is worth a bit more than $1700 AUD

The return flight is 200 SC's, so roughly $8.5/sc. It's ok, but you also have to get yourself to and from Perth as well.

Just checked it out for my planned return travel date [Jan 18]. Unfortunately the connections are not good. QF16 SIN-PER dep 10:15 arr 15:25. Next available PER-SYD is the red-eye departing at 23:15. Alternately there is QF78 SIN-PER dep 19:50 arr 00:55. Next available PER-SYD is at 05:50. Neither options are appealing.

If I dep SIN the following day (Thu 19), QF72 SIN-PER dep 09:10 arr 14:10, I don't think I would make it onto QF566 PER-SYD dep 15:15. The next flight after that is QF518 @ 23:15. DJ has nothing that fits either.

I guess I could add a day in Perth but I doubt the "trouble & strife" would be pleased. :o
