Here's the situation. On Saturday I, along with Marge and Maggie, will be flying DJ (it's my first time on DJ) because they had the right schedule/price combination for our short visit to Airlie Beach, landing at Hamilton Island.

When I booked the (cheap) tickets online I selected only one item of checked luggage which I intended to be for our bag of snorkeling gear. I thought that we would each take a roll-a-board for the rest of the luggage - after all it is only a three day trip.

However today I double-checked the DJ baggage rules and they state that you can only take one carry-on bag with linear dimensions of 105cm. As we only take carry-on most times with QF domestic flights, we use the international sized roll-a-boards which are 115cm bags which QF allows under their rules (you can either have 2 x 105cm bags or 1 x 115cm bag). DJ does not have this rule and we don't have 105cm bags.

So my question is: if the three of us turn up with roll-a-boards that have linear dimensions of 115cm will DJ want us to check them in and fork out $20 per bag for the privilege? If so I would be better off paying an extra $8 online and checking in one medium sized bag for the three of us.

(I know it's only $8, but I will be annoyed if I turn up at the gate having paid $8 for luggage and find DJ is allowing people to carry on larger cases, etc, like you see in the US)

I fly quite regularly MCY to SYD on DJ taking only a wheel on, which is 115cms, and the only problem is weight, 7kgs total if memory serves me right, if I'm over, I take the laptop out and carry it under arm, which strangely keeps all happy.
Cheers Dee

Thanks Dee. With regard to the weight, do they check this at the gate? Do they make everyone weigh their bags or is it a random selection?

Homer, I always print my ticket, and seating the day before flying via the DJ sight, and without any checked luggage, go through security to the waiting lounge at MCY, bypassing any checks. The crew at the gate don't even look at wheel on gear, not their problem.
Have a great break,
Cheers Dee

7kg's is the limit in the cabin for safety reasons... laptops AREN'T considered part of the 7kg, hence why they probably ask you to remove it.

As for your baggae allowance, you should also be entitled to 5kg more for your checked lugage because you have "sporting equipment" therfore you get 28kg to check in.

DJ do try and weigh carry ons. They really are not that concerned with size.My carryon is 117cm but can be squashed.today in BNE it was weghed-6.8kg without laptop so OK-obviously they had a good look at it.Still fits in the DJ overhead.
If you are a little over the 7kg Then check in on line, leave the carryons with the others whilst you do the bag drop. They could still weigh at the gate but DJ doesnt seem to do this often unlike JQ which even at MCY will weigh at the gate.Certainly they have done this with me and mrsdrron.
