Supplemental question:

What about on partner airlines - I am aware of the table at velocityrewards.com.au for lounge access, but it's not clear if you are allowed one guest on, say, Etihad? Would be very difficult for my partner to have to wait outside at Abu Dhabi on the next trip to Europe...

Which table are you referring to, if you go to the gold benefits and click on the lounge access you will see a guest is permitted when flying Etihad:

Complimentary access for you and a guest to Etihad Diamond First Class, Pearl Business Class and worldwide Partner Lounges.

Yes, and your guest doesn't even need to be flying anywhere.

This only applies to Australian DJ lounges.
