Currently sitting on DJ 741 waiting to fly MEL to OOL and CS has announced the flight as VA 741 no mention of the letters DJ. Is there a change in the air and they are just going to use the long haul designator of VA.

I imagine (and it's probably more than just rumour) that eventually all Virgin Australia operated flights will use VA as the designator.

That said, for domestic flights that are / were "codeshared" between Virgin Australia short haul and Virgin Australia long haul international, they had the same flight number but just used different designators (akin to JQ codeshares on QF flights, which was the same QF flight number except a 5 was usually appended to the beginning).

There is one slight exception - if you book a long haul VA service with either a short haul international or domestic connection, the connecting flight will have a VA code, even if it's operated by Virgin Australia as a DJ flight.

I actually wonder whether the codes can merge since the "financial and operation split" of Virgin Australia Domestic and Virgin Australia International - I assume they operate under separate AOCs??
Then again I guess QF manages to get that code on JetConnect operations, so maybe possible.

It has already been announced ( tho can’t find the AFF thread) once Virgin Australia move to the new reservation system , all flights will become VA

Yes, the plan is that when the migration to Sabre is done, there will be only one designator.

All DJ flights have a VA codeshare for connections to/from Long Haul flights. Maybe the CS was reading off this?
