Hi everyone,

Going to Perth for a footy weekend on Friday, August 17.
Am thinking of using Velecoty points to travel in J on the 1pm MEL-PER A330 service.
I am already booked on this service, paid for in Y ($169 saver fare).
33,800 points seems a lot, but I am prepared to do it just for the experience. Does anyone know if this aircraft is configured in the 2-2-2 class?
Also, what's the best way to upgrade? Does it mean I will have re-book using Velocity points and cancel my Y flight (minus the $60 cancellation fee, which gives me a credit of $109 to use in the future)?
Any thoughts on whether it is worth it or not? Any thoughts on the best, most price-competitve way to do this? I have only just earned enough points to do this, otherwise I would have just stuck with my original Y flight.
I'm already booked in Y coming back using QF points on the Sunday, so I have that leg of the journey sorted.
Thanks in advance.

With half price upgrades are you better off booking flexi Y and upgrading using points?

So cancel my original flight and use the $109 credit towards a $305 flexi fare and then upgrade with points? Is it half points? So 33,800 points becomes $196 plus 16,900 points?
Not a bad suggestion.

One way is the flexi fare + 4950 points I believe.

I think it is an excellent deal. I'll be doing that before the end of the year, once if not twice.

Thanks for your help.
Did exactly as you said. Cancelled my Y booking. Rebooked with a flexi fare using the credit from the cancelled booking and upgraded using half points.
Total cost for upgrading to J was $200 and 4950 Velocity points. No brainer, particularly when I will earn flexi SCs and recoup around half the Velocity points that I used.
This website is awesome. In the past, I would have just not thought about things like that and just gone ahead and rebooked using 33,800 Velocity points, which would have been such a waste.
Thumbs up to you Tony, but thumbs up to you all. My shout in the Lounge (lame attempt at humour).
