My wife and I will be flying to Canada with Air Canada later this year and I was thinking about joining the BMI Diamond club in order to earn some Star Alliance miles, but I'm just wondering if we both need to join BMI to get the miles, or when I buy both tickets online do they just credit the miles for both flights to my account?

You'll both need to join as you can only ever earn points on your own flights.

I'm not sure whether they have a family transfer arrangement similar to QF F/F, im sure some of the *A members on the board might have a better idea.

If you buy both tickets online using your credit card, and that card if affiliated with BMI program then you will get points for the purchased, but as mentioned by Travel Guru you do not earn points for the actual miles flown.
